BGW 320 LIMITS SPEED TO 100 MBPS
Hello!
I've done a ton of research and tried everything. Now I'm not sure what to do.
I have 500 MBPS speed ATT Fiber and recently got the BGW 320 as an upgrade from the 200 series to see if it would fix the issue I'm having. I have a netgear orbi router and done all necessary steps to put the BGW in passthrough/bridge mode (turning off wifi, security features, router mode, etc)
I noticed under the ATT router menu under device list that when connected to my orbi router my connection speed is limited
Connection Speed | 100Mbps fullduplex |
---|
I thought maybe it was because I connected it to the 1GB port so I switched to port 2 and it jumped to 1000MBPS so all was working fine. However, a few hours later it went back down to 100 on its own.
Again, tested with direct LAN to PC and I am getting normal speeds. The only issue is this throttling from the BGW320 to the Orbi router.
Any ideas? My last last solution is possibly a new LAN cable. But it was working fine at 1000 and then randomly drops to 100 on its own.
Thank you!

I know there are other with this problem. Again, to sum up.
Netgear Orbi Router with BGW 210 at first, after factory reset, resetting modem, I'd get the speeds I'm paying for. However, after a few hours, sometimes days, it would drop down to ALWAYS under 100 MBPS.
This was BEYOND frustrating. I removed all my wifi devices to look to see if that was the cause. I checked firmware, software, etc. Again, this would occur on wifi and directly plugged in to the router.
So I thought it was my old netgear orbi router. I ended up getting a new one that could handle more smart devices and thought that fixed the problem. However, few days later, it would happen again.
The ATT forums were amazing help throughout all this and it allowed me to get an upgrade from the BGW 210 to the 310 to see if that fixed it. Finally, I kept seeing everywhere to try getting a new cable. I didn't think this would EVER be the case but finally I switched the cable that connected from the BGW to the netgear orbi and it's been about 3 days now and I'm running at full speeds.
When in doubt, always check the BGW router log in, http://192.168.1.254/, to to device list and make sure your device connection speed is running at 1000 mbps FULL duplex.
I recently found out that due to the cable, it would throttle back down to 100 mbps full duplex which is why I always got speeds no higher than 100 mbps.
This again is with my BGW in passthrough / bridge/ mode. But yes, firmware is up to date for both devices and all I did was switch it with a new reliable cat 6e cable. Again, i'm hoping it doesn't drop down but will update here if it does. but thanks all!

Are you plugged into the Blue (#1) LAN port? If so, try any one of the three yellow ones. That port is notorious for having problems syncing properly with other devices. If you're really sold on using the blue port (for reasons unknown), try plugging both into a Gigabit Ethernet switch.

Wow you're fast. I am not! I plugged into a yellow one yesterday and it showed up as 1000Mbps fullduplex. Then this morning it went back down to 100

If you have one lying around, try the Gigabit Ethernet Switch trick.

What perceived benefit do you feel you’re getting connecting the Orbi to Arris gateway via IP Passthrough?

Actually, now that I've had a bit of time to think, you're not the first person who has had issues with the BGW320 ports working a 1000 Mbps and then dropping back to 100 Mbps. It seems to have started happening with a recent firmware version. A restart will fix it... for a while. You might try using the Home Network > Configure page to fix the speed at 1Gbps Full Duplex but I'm afraid you might find that the connection just quits working.

The crazy thing is it did this with the older bgw210. I even upgraded my orbi system but it’s still doing it.
will try that!

Tried to cap the duplex at 1 gb but it drops the internet on the router every few minutes. Back to square one

The BGW210 has not been shown to have this issue. The BGW320 just started showing it recently, I think following a particular firmware upgrade, because, if my memory is correct, several people popped up with a similar problem within a week of a BGW320 firmware update starting to be reported.
