block sites in BGW210-700
At my router, I want to block access to specific sites. I found an older posting asking the same thing
https://forums.att.com/conversations/att-fiber-equipment/arris-bgw210700-how-to-block-facebookinstagram-for-specific-times/5df02765bad5f2f606ae666c
which mentioned installing an app that costs $8 a month, which is crazy. All I need is the equivalent of an /etc/hosts line or two that sends traffic to those sites to an address that won't resolve.
http://192.168.1.254/cgi-bin/parentalcontrol.ha
says
Parental Control
Status Disabled
and there doesn't look to be any way to enable it.
Does anybody have any suggestions using the default att router to accomplish this?
Thanks

We are here to help, @gahzinia.
What websites are you trying to block?
If you want to enable Parental Controls, you can download the AT&T tool bar. You can click Download Now to get the tool bar for your browser.
Let us know if this helps.

I agree that AT&T really needs to implement blocking of specific URLs into its parental controls. This is a MUST HAVE for parents.

Hello @gahzinia
Thanks for reaching back out through our Community Forum. We understand your concerns regarding parental controls, specific to blocking web sites.
The BGW210-700 and other model AT&T RG's (Residential Gateway) do not have a interface security /parental control feature that will allow you to block web sites. At this time we have no information on any interface software update that could support this feature.
Our Smart Home Manager has some good features as we outlined, but it's going to be limited for the feature that you're looking for. For this issue ,you would need to download a parental control software on the device that you're looking to manage. Most parental control applications or software support the feature block to Adult content, manually entered sites, etc.
If you're looking to manage web sites and your network through a router interface, you can do that and have more control of settings using a 3rd party router behind the AT&T RG. For information on how to set up a router behind your AT&T RG, check out this article.
Should you need any further support, feel free to let us know.
Chad, AT&T Community Specialist.

Pretty much your only option is an additional network appliance that provides that functionality. Many home routers are able to provide some of what you seek (e.g. block URLs by keywords found in them). A home router would allow you to change your DNS provider to one that may more intelligently deny access to "bad" sites. There are dedicated security appliances that function like a router/firewall that could do this for you.
However, neither the AT&T Gateway nor any of their network components are going to do this for you.

It's pretty lousy that AT&T doesn't provide this feature. Even my new BGW-320 that came with my AT&T 1Gig fiber can't do this.
There is, however, a Packet Filter available from the Firewall menu. It can't block packets based on website names but it can block based on IP addresses. If you can find out the IP addresses of websites you want to block, you can make "drop" rules for those destination IP addresses in the Packet Filter.
Of course, if the website changes IP address, you're out of luck.

My bet is AT&T is pressured by Big Tech to not give this power to parents to block their content. They know how to do this just that they won't give it to us because big money is at stake.....Sad

If there were a way of adjudicating your bet, I predict you'd lose your wager. AT&T is trying to provide lowest common denominator functionality. Blocking "objectional" content is a complex issue. What is objectional to you is not objectional to others. What is acceptable to you is not necessarily acceptable to others. Some content providers work very hard to circumvent prevention mechanisms, so it's a never ending battle.
Others will provide solutions that will work better than anything AT&T would offer, and you are welcome to use those solutions.
