Does changing the BGW210 name SSID on the Smart Home Manager change it on both radio bands?
How to make sure that changing the BGW210 router name SSID changes on it on both radio bands, 2.4 and 5 GHz?

Log into the modem's interface
192.168.1.254
Input device access code printed on side of modem (black sticker)
Navigate to WiFi settings page
It will default you to the 2.4GHz page. Make any changes, press save.
Navigate to the drop down and change it from 2.4GHz to 5GHz to go to the 5GHz page.
Make any changes, press save.

Are there any disadvantages to changing the name SSID name from the default shipped?
Secondly, after changing the name SSID, does it interfere with AT&T software upgrades sent to the router?

The only real disadvantage is that if you or anyone from AT&T factory resets your modem, it will revert back to default.
But if you're comfortable logging into the modem and changing it back it's not really a big deal.
It will still get updates regardless of what the SSID and password are.

Nope. Unplugging the modem, house losing power, etc won't factory reset it.
There is a little red button on the back of the modem, holding that down will do it.
Also if you were to call into the 1-800 hotline for issues, it could get set to factory default.
