Higher than normal CPU usage when connected to my AT&T internet

We have wireless internet at our home provided through an AT&T Uverse internet service and router that's been in our home for several years. I've recently noticed that on my laptop computer, the CPU usage spikes every minute for a few seconds, and then drops. Specifically, it's the SYSTEM process in task manager that spikes briefly. At first, I was thinking this was an issue with my laptop (spyware, malware, other services, etc). But then I noticed it happening on my wife's laptop too. And, this ONLY happens when connected to our home internet (AT&T). Whenever we're connected to any other internet source (at work, a Verizon jetpack, other networks, etc) our computers behave normally. So I'm thinking it's something with our network.

Has anyone experienced this issue, and have any suggestions? Perhaps my box is old, or needs to be reset? Thanks in advance for your help.

You don't have wireless internet, you have a broadband internet connection with a gateway that provides WiFi, such as it is.  If you have a BGW gateway, then replacing it won't make a lick of difference, otherwise have Att send you a BGW gateway.  Regardless, I'd still recommend getting your own access point connected WiFi system.  That will get you as close to a proper generic WiFi connection as possible.  Don't forget to turn off the WiFi radios in the gateway.
