Ongoing issues with the Netgear 7550

I can't tell you how many hours I've spent on the phone with a variety of reps from the company including one from the President's office. I've continually had problems with this modem during the past year. I have replaced it twice and it still randomly drops the signal. This isn't limited to my Apple devices. My weather station, my laptop, my house thermostat... all of them come up without a signal at random times and need to be restarted.

This week, my AirBnB guests were completely unable to log onto their work computers even though I guaranteed them that they would be able to work from my home. I'm now having to unplug the router at least once a day to reconnect everything to wifi.

I've taken to doing my own diagnostics now on the modem and making adjustments because I cannot spend countless hours on the phone with reps who claim to have it fixed and then days later the same problem occurs. I'm documenting each change I make in case I need to reverse a setting. Today I ran my diagnostics and after running I see that this line of the IP test has failed "Continuity check to 6rd BR." A Google search indicates that this is a common problem with this modem especially with Windows 10.

Since DSL is the only option here in my area, does anyone have suggestions or solutions? Does ATT have plans to offer a better modem for those of us who can't access broadband?

Thanks in advance for any assistance. Sorry that this message is filled with frustration.

Good afternoon @QueenieCaffeine,

I would be more than happy to help you out with your internet issues today but first I have to ask; when did you last speak with someone from the President’s office? And no need to worry about the frustration in your messages; I completely understand, especially when it interferes with your business.

I just spoke with Jim from the President’s tech group yesterday. We did a complete reset on the system and he cleared out a few “ghost sessions” on his side as he called them. So far, so good; I didn’t need to restart it today. He’s going to call me on Wednesday when he’s back in the office to see if the problem has finally been resolved. I will keep you advised. Thank you for your offer of assistance.

Ghost sessions? We just got this router under 2 weeks ago and it seems we are having the exact same problems and I’m seeing what appear to be ghost wifi spots. Maybe this is an old session? Did you ever resolve your issue? Ever day we have a different problem. Today it says the wifi password is incorrect even though I know for a fact everything was typed correctly. Yesterday it viewed the network as a different security type even though it is set up WPAK…

We'll gladly assist you with your gateway, scgreg99.

Before we get started, we need you to create a new thread. This one is 4 years old and subject to being closed to further posting, which means we can't respond to you. Be sure to include as many details as possible so that we can determine the best course of action for you.

In the meantime, try a factory reset on your gateway. This is a common solution to many Wi-Fi and connection problems. Locate the small red button and pinhole on the lower rear of the gateway and depress for ~15 seconds. You can let us know how it went on the new thread.

We look forward to hearing back from you.

You should see if there are any "unlimited" hotspot offers from mobile carriers in your area. Or fixed wireless. The mobile phone network is becoming more capable than DSL.
