ping skyrockets whenever used

anytime I ever use the internet for anything the ping goes from around 40 to 20,000-50,000 and stays like that for 5 some minutes and I never can get anything done. YouTube or just playing games kills it and we've had internet for not even 4 months now and it's ridiculous how awful the experience has been. I'm better off not even having internet at this point and might as well cut off AT&T

How did you get PING to wait 20 seconds for a reply instead of timeout out (oh, wait, there is a switch for that).  Anyway, I'd suggest two things:

1) Make sure you (or one of your devices unknown to you) are uploading a lot of data,

2) Check your line stats to see if you're having line issues.  Try http://192.168.1.254/ , click on the broadband tab and look for a table of numbers with Sync rates, SNR, attenuation and error counts.  Post a screenshot of the table in a reply for our analysis.

My bet is that it's #1, though.
