remove equipment from outside wall of my house and return

Hello. I have finally cancelled the last portion of my U-verse account. For many years, I had U-verse internet, TV, and phone service and it worked great. However, gradually, the internet speed became too slow for our devices and streaming that we do. ATT offered no higher speed to our home. So, we first disconnected internet and TV. Now, we have replaced the phone service for something less expensive and actually much better. So, now I have all the ATT U-verse equipment disconnected from the inside of my house. But, on the outside, there are two large boxes with equipment and cables connected. I want to remove them, but do not feel comfortable doing it myself for fear of causing an issue with the ATT system or perhaps an electrical event at my house. So, my question is, who at ATT can come get their property off myh house. If I do it myself, it may not get done, and likely will damage the equipment. Please respond. Thanks.

Once equipment is attached to the property, it becomes a part of the property.   AT&T doesn’t want it back and they will not remove it.  Call an electrician.

It does appear that way.  If I can get that in writing directly from the company, then I will proceed.  I am in the process of calling all that can to make sure right now actually.  I am concerned about live wire as well.  Something powered this equipment or it would not have worked.

Hi there, @freelsjd! Let's get you pointed in the right direction.

Although AT&T doesn't typically remove outside equipment, we'd recommend that you contact our Buried Wire Center team to find out what options you may have. Call them anytime at 800.288.2020.

  • Have AT&T service? Provide your account info and say, “Line is down.”
  • Don’t have AT&T service? Say "No account." When asked if you want to order new service, say "No." Then, to let us know why you're calling, say “Line is down.”

Please don't hesitate to reach back out if you need help in the future. Thank you for contacting the AT&T Community Forums!

The buried wire idea partially worked.  I was successful in getting some of the wire that was coming to my house removed and/or disconnected.  However, I did not get any of the equipment removed.  I am positive that the newest equipment there from ATT/U-verse was still functional and useful perhaps to somebody who might need spare parts or even a replacement unit.  It was basically a stand-alone computer.  So, with nowhere to send it, and nobody to come remove it, I just did it myself.  I think I put it in a metal scrap/recycle bin at the county dump.  I felt wasteful, but no other option that I could find.

The normal NID ( network interface device) is just an empty shell that houses the connection points including protectors and grounding for the incoming drop wire to meet the outgoing house wiring.

There were 2 or 3 NID that had electronic equipment… the firs was the 2WIRE3812 better known as the INID installed from 2011 to 2014ish. The other two were for early fiber deployment, the BPON ONT similar in shape and size to the INID and a NID that held the Nokia 240 ONT (smaller white unit secured in plastic shell).

All three of these required an external power supply to be indoors, normally about the size of a small toaster.

Standard NIDs had no power going to the outdoor box.

Techs normally do not remove NIDs as there are holes drilled into the supporting wall which can be problematic if not sealed properly… same reason techs do not remove DirecTv mounts from roofs…. Possible leakage, insects, etc. Once physical attachment is made it is yours.
