Router issues with chromecasting

I just saw This article this morning. Does anyone know if AT&T is having their vendors work on a fix for their gateways?

I’ve been having the mentioned issues, both dropping devices and not letting them connect, and also constant disconnect and reconnecting, which require a gateway restart to fix, since mid-November. A gateway replacement did not solve the issue, so I’m pretty sure this is a issue that affects the AT&T gateway software.

I would take that article with a grain of salt. The AT&T RGs already are fragile for wireless as they are and for users that do not have Chromecast.

I have an NVG 599, 3 Chromecasts, and have seen no evidence of this problem myself.

Another user suggested turning guest mode off.

I would take it with a grain of salt too. Except that it’s exactly the issue I’ve been having since Mid-November, and it’s persisted even after AT&T replaced my NVG599 (which was having the issue as well) With a BGW210 that is also having the issue. Before this, we had a perfect connection and no issues for 11+ months in our current apartment, and a year and a half in our prior apartment.

I just had to restart the router because it kicked off my iPad and wouldn’t let it connect, shortly after I opened the YouTube app on my phone. My wife and my android phones tend to stay connected, while almost everything else gets booted from the network and cannot reconnect till after a router reboot.

Guest mode is off, also. Still having the issue. And it seems more well known websites (android police, for one) are also writing about it, related to the new google home max.

When Wifi drops, do both the 2.4 and 5GHz connected devices drop off?  I can try to replicate.  The thing is, Chromecast isn't one of my personal favorite devices but it does get used here.  I could banish them if I knew they were causing problems.  After a recent rash of multi-reboots per day, I decided to reset the Arris device and slowly onboard devices starting with the Uverse ones looking for any signs of trouble along the way.  Still haven't found a sweet spot where everything is working as it should.  This morning I rebooted because my laptops are not reflecting correctly in the home screen of the RG for band mode.  Can't decide if this is just a straight bug in the firmware or a symptom of an issue within the DHCP server.  Some devices like my iPhone and Fire tablets are able to switch bands correctly with band steering active, but the Windows laptops usually don't.

One of my CCs had guest mode active.  The way the option is presented, wasn't obvious it could be turned off but I managed to figure it out.  The CCs are original vintage, FWIW.

For me, everything drops off except my android devices (two phones). Both my iPads drop, my tv drops, and my computers either drop or start to constantly disconnect and reconnect depending on what OS it is running.

Same issue. I spent 6 days with technicians at my house in December trying to fix the issue. Nothing worked, they even replaced my router twice! Anything on the WiFi network will disconnect at random intervals.  My laptop will disconnect, and only reconnect with a router reboot.

There has been a couple articles recently on the issue:

https://www.myce.com/news/confirmed-issue-google-cast-causes-temporarily-wifi-drops-around-world-83428/

http://www.tp-link.com/us/faq-2050.html

I will do more testing with my android devices and Chromecast devices turned off today. It is looking likely though that Uverse routers are experiencing this issue in homes with Google Cast devices.

I don't know....ever since the band-steering update my wifi has been miserable. Whether I have the SSID's name/password the same or not. If I name them separate, the 5ghz doesn't even broadcast, at all.

Until they fix the band steering, we'll just have to deal with it, unfortunately.

Another news source (https://9to5google.com/2018/01/15/google-chromecast-home-wifi-outage/) seems to say Google is working on resolving the issue. Wonder how long it'll take to fix the bug and push the solution out... Meanwhile I've disconnected my Chromecast devices. That seems to temporarily solve the issue.

Well done.

I have to control myself because I've been through what seems like months of endless troubleshooting and until things settle down, won't really know for sure.  For now all the CCs will stay off the network.

I must say, I'm impressed with the troubleshooting everyone here is doing. I had been in this thread (https://forums.att.com/t5/AT-T-Internet-Equipment/Arris-BGW210-700-WiFi-Radios-Keep-Dropping/td-p/5366094) and just disabled the WiFi on my BGW210 and put in an access point instead of fighting with it. I'll definitely have to keep an eye on this -- seriously appreciate you all working on it!

I had all the devices drop off (thermostats, ChromeCasts, laptops, Android phones, iPhones, Echo Dot, smart outlets...) and none of them would reconnect. It didn't matter if it was 2.4 or 5GHz - I'd have to restart both radios before anything would come back online. My TV and laptop docking station would stay connected just fine since they're hardwired. At least the radio subsytems can be restarted without having to reboot the gateway itself.

I went through two 5268ACs and those had the same issue has my BGW210 before I gave up and just did an AP instead of the built-in wireless.

Edit to add: the devices that would give usable error messages could still see the WiFi network but were apparently getting authentication errors. I also had the problem without the ChromeCasts plugged in, but there may have been a delay between connecting the ChromeCasts, waiting 10 hours, connecting something else, wait, add something else, wait, and then a problem arising due to an earlier-connected device. Good luck, everyone!

The way the article explains the issue, the packet flooding should be transient, and the router should eventually recover.  However many are saying once devices disconnect, they never reconnect again until the RG is bounced.  It's still possible there are multiple issues in play.

Now that the CCs are all offline, it will take several days to be sure things have settled down.
