Using Belkin UPS and RB Modem
Yesterday I had a tech come because the day before our internet kept going on and off. He checked the lines and said they were fine. He did replace the "RB" which is what he called the modem. I pointed out that it was plugged into a Belkin uninterruptible power source, and he said those are bad. He said his instructions were to disconnect any of them that he encountered. He said that they "tear up" the RB. I allowed him to disconnect it, and then when he left, he was going to take it with him! I said that I thought it was ours, and he said oh he was just going to take it to dispose of it, because it wasn't any good. I said we would just keep it because I might want to use it for something else.
The Belkin UPS is indeed rather old, but it still works, and was not beeping or anything. Is it true that it would cause damage to the modem? If this is true, then what sort of UPS should I buy to enable internet when the power goes out?

Well darn that was supposed to be RG not RB.

The old external BBU (Battery Back Up) originally provided is the property of AT&T but they don't want it back. I never thought of keeping the old one I had. I had to find a place to recycle it.
Depending on the model of RG (Residential Gateway) installed, it may have an internal BBU . If you got an RG with that option, the battery for the internal BBU is not provided and must be purchased by the customer.
Do you have Uverse phone service and what is the brand/model of the new RG?

Thank you for your reply. The new RG is an ARRIS NVG589 and no, I do not have U-Verse phone service.

The 589 does have an internal BBU but will only run Uvoice. If you want BBU, you will need to buy your own unit and install it accordingly.
I have the 599 along with Uvoice. I bought the internal battery for it. When my power went out, I was surprised that it provided power for my phone service only.
From another post: If you would like your internet service to be active during a power outage(assuming the local AT&T equipment stays alive), then you must use an external battery backup, such as a Cyberpower UPS.
