Wired and wireless networks cannot access each other

ATT Uverse customer for many years.

Modem 5268AC FXN tied to an 8 port trendnet GB dumb data switch.

Using the built in WiFi on 2.4GHz only.  A 2.4GHz Netgear wireless router with fixed IP, no DHCP in the garage simply hanging off a network drop.

Security active, pre-shared passkey, etc.

Fibre to the residence installed around the same time these problems started to occur.

Over the past three months I've had a series of strange problems with devices on my LAN becoming inaccessible.  The printer would work from the desktop PC, but when a print job would originate from the laptop, printer was offline.  It is on a hardwired connection and has worked for years. Go to desktop, call up same job, prints OK.

Couple days later, no apparent problem printing from any device...

Couple days after, needed to print out an email, printer is again offline from laptop using wireless connection.

Etc.

I have a house remote control system that has a user interface for iPhones, iPads, Androids, etc.

I'll reach in my pocket, run the app, it'll indicate that the host isn't available at the IP address.

Ask my wife for her iPhone, run the same app, it works fine.  The next day, the reverse will be true...that is, mine will work, but hers will not be able to access the host.

On several occasions I've trouble shot this problem finding that 1 or sometimes all of the iPhones won't work, but the iPads will.  On one occasion, the only device that would access the host was the android Samsung Galaxy tablet.  No iPhones or iPads.  Next morning, as I prepared to call ATT, everything again worked.

I figured this was a problem with the home remote control, right?  Wrong.  Its a symptom of something else.

In an unrelated chain of events, the printer mentioned in the paragraph above failed and was replaced with a nice HP that was wireless only.  Initially, it worked great.  Install was straightforward and successful on desktop PC and wireless laptop.  48 hours later, the printer was unavailable to any device on the wired network, only to wireless devices!...and that was my first clue.

BTW, all wireless and all wired devices always connect to the internet, just not each other.

It recovered while I was at work and that evening, all was working fine.

Eventually, it failed on a day when I was home from work and available for 'hold time' with ATT.

The technician was courteous, but unfortunately, didn't understand my problem or didn't have sufficient experience or knowledge.

At any rate, he followed the script and did the tests in order and when he rebooted the residential gateway, the problem disappeared...so problem solved, thank you sir, have a nice day.

He also said my modem had failed to update the firmware on recent attempt, did it manually, and was successful while I waited.  This could've been the whole problem...

Anyway,

I am not certain this is a defect in my modem.  I have read and examined my settings and wonder if there is an incorrect setting somewhere.

The IVP6 stuff, which has not been active before, is all showing up on ipconfig in a console window on the PCs.  Running FING on iPhone, iPad when the problem exists reveals ping connectivity to the ATT router, but no other wired device.  Similarly, using Angry IP Scanner on a Winders 10 machine will show wired devices but varied wireless device connectivity.

Sometimes there will be NO wireless connectivity, sometimes SOME devices show up, sometimes all will show up.

As I began write this, the problem existed and having run these scans again just now to insure the accuracy of my post, the pings have started responding again.

This is driving me nuts.

If you have any insights, I'd appreciate it.

If there's a way to get an ATT someone technical to have a look at my router, it would be great.

I guess I could just demand a new one, but I'm not convinced its defective.  I think there is a setting that has been changed, etc.  Perhaps a network problem that is tied to implementing IVP6?  I'm technical, but not a network guru.

I am also have this same issue, for about 18-24 months now. I have learned to live with it until now.

Now I cannot access my NAS and decided to look into the issue and came across this post. Great explanation of the issue.

I've been working from home for about a year now and recently refreshed my computer (Win10, using wireless) and now I have no connectivity to my wired network NAS. IPv6 is not enabled on my device and I have rebooted my gateway since the refresh.

I'm also seeing a daily network drop (Since I'm home all day) losing connectivity to network and internet, it's making me lose my mind.

The breakdown in wireless to wired networking continued to plague me until
ATT replaced my residential gateway. The problem disappeared and was
replaced with a new one...even more intermittent.
The WiFi has a low output, about 30-35dB at 10ft.
It will occasionally switch off/on for about 1 second every 15 seconds or
so. My IT friends say this
can be normal behavior for some equipment, but it should cease when a
device is connected and active. Several times while working wirelessly, my
activity would become sluggish or stop. Upon troubleshooting, I would find
the there was no WiFi in the house! I tried a variety of tests and
configurations, all confirmed that the WiFi was simply going off for a
period of time, then it would reappear and all is well again. Finally,
this happened so often that I had to fix it. I used a real WAP, connected
directly to the residential gateway and turned off all the radios in the
residential gateway. Not only has my internet connection stabilized, but
the signal strength is 40-45dB at 20ft, a huge improvement in coverage and
accordingly, performance.
I hope you're able to find a fix or a work around for your issue and best
of luck with ATT phone tech support.

(ooops, sorry for the late reply - I didn't realize how old this thread was. Sorry)

So if I understand you correctly you have TWO wireless access points, the 5268AC FX and the NETGEAR, right?

There is only ONE DHCP server, right (the 5268AC?)

It also sounds like the NETGEAR and the 5268AC FX are on the same Trendnet switch?

And the NETGEAR is set up as an ACCESS POINT not a ROUTER, right?

Key concept: Devices need to be on the same "broadcast domain" to find each other.

A LAN is a broadcast domain. So that always works.

A Wi-Fi *bridged" to the LAN (as an access point) is in the same broadcast domain.

A Wi-Fi across a NAT/Router is NOT in the same broadcast domain. It will be able to reach the devices with a direct address, but will not be able to DISCOVER them.

If I had to guess, I'd say the devices that fail are on the other side of a router, and the connection may fail if it ends up on the wrong one.

To diagnose, give the Wi-Fi devices different names and see if the problem tracks to connecting to the specific named Wi-Fi.

Just piling on here. Same exact problem. Everything was fine for a year, then ATT did something to my router and reset it, wiping out my SSID and password (and I'm guessing installed a firmware update). Now I have two separate networks, my wired network and my wireless network. Everything gets internet and can ping the router at 192.168.1.254, but none of the wired devices can see any of the wireless devices or vice versa.

This (Edited per community guidelines) because I can no longer use my printer from half my devices and I can no longer use my NAS file server from the other half of my devices. ATT has no idea what I'm talking about. As far as they are concerned if I can see the Internet they can do nothing else to fix it.
