How to configure TP-Link TD-W8968 to use Uverse

I tried setting it up but on my W8968 all I get is blinking dsl led.  Uverse works fine with the 2Wire att lease unit.  I called the att uverse tech support, she couldn't help me, all she said was I open up the port on my end, so you shouldn't have to worry about vci vpi 0/35, and it should just connect when you plug the line in.  I called the TP Link, he didn't get back to me as he doesn't have the modem/router for simulation.

Short of switching to another provider, you cannot avoid paying AT&T a monthly fee for your Residential Gateway.  The TW-W8968 is an ADSL2+ unit, which may (or may not) be technologically suitable for the type of U-verse connection you have (which you didn't mention, nor did you mention with RG you have, which would tell us the other).  However, it really doesn't matter, since it won't have the AT&T firmware with the AT&T Certificate in it which AT&T requires to connect to the U-verse network.

If you can, return the TW-W8968 from whence it came, and enjoy your AT&T provided RG.
