Just purchased U-Verse Internet 18mbps; can barely even stream a TV show from Netflix. What gives?

My u-verse internet was connected today, I purchased the 18mbps package for nearly $60 a month and as we were trying to watch a show on Netflix, it would frequently go to a buffering screen and/or the picture quality would degrade.  This internet is fiber to the demarc outside of my house and then runs across cat5 throughout my house.  I'm using the provided 2Wire Wifi router and a Roku box for netflix.  18mbps should be more than enough bandwidth to stream a show on Netflix...we've actually resorted to using my Verizon Hotspot for the time being because attempting to stream anything over the Uverse connection just isn't working.

Whats the deal?  Is this sort of performance to be expected?

@911Eric See SomeJoe's great wireless interference thread:

Please Read for a Potential Solution

For many people, the DHCP problems with the 2Wire/Pace/Motolra routers can be solved by configuring the RG as follows:

1. Go to http://192.168.1.254/ and find the RG's wireless configuration page.

2. Change the setting "Wi-Fi Protected Setup" to Disabled.

3. Change the setting "Authentication Type" to WPA2-PSK (AES).

4. Click the "Save" button at the bottom.

5. This procedure may ask for your RG's password. The default password for your RG is printed on a sticker on the side of the RG (3600HGV, 3800HGV-B, 3801HGV and NVG589/510) or on a white sticker on the backup battery (i3812V).

Disabling WPS should help with the DHCP timeout issue and general wireless connection problems.

Setting authentication specifically to WPA2-PSK/AES improves connection reliability on Macs and other Apple products.

Good luck 😉

Chris

Is the Roku box a wired or wireless connection?

If wireless you should try a wired connection to see if that works.

Thanks for the replies Chris and Jeffster. I will try what you suggest for the DHCP timeout.

Jeffster; the Roku box is wireless but works fine when connected wirelessly to my hotspot, I only have the issues streaming when connected to the uverse 2wire gateway.
