LOTS of questions from a Newbie

I’ve had this hotspot for over a year and I still feel like I don’t know what I’m doing.

do I want the hotspot connected via ethernet? Or Wi-Fi and cellular? Since I’ve had this it is not been connected to an ethernet cable. It is only been connected by USB.

I’ve been trying to connect a Wi-Fi extender upstairs and it won’t let me set a password to keep others out. How do I go about doing this?

We have 8 devices,  max of 5 on at any given time. It’s hard to stream a movie.  I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. Our signal is maybe 2-3 bars at most ever.

I’ve watched countless YouTube videos and read things about it. I just feel defeated.🤦🏼‍♀️
But any help would be GREATLY appreciated..  Thanks so much

How about providing the make and model number of the device you’re asking about?

And to be clear, the term hotspot applies to case where no wired internet is available.   Your mobile phone for instance can be a hotspot to catch cellular data and make it available for use as a WiFi signal.

We understand, and we're hear to assist you on your concerns regarding the Wi-Fi extender, @Zee7!

Unlike many 3rd party extenders, the AT&T Smart Wi-Fi Extender uses the same Network Name(SSID) as your Gateway so your devices may actually be connecting to the new extender already.

If you want to tell for sure, our Smart Home Manager is a great resource that will show you what is connected to your network and how it's connected.

Furthermore, we'd like to know more details:

  • Are you facing issue with mobile hotspot?
  • Let us know the details about your plan?

Looking forward to hearing from you again.

Thank you for contacting AT&T Community Forum!

I’m using the NETGEAR Nighthawk M6 model. It’s a little square white portable box.   And I tried logging into the Smart Home manager app and it won’t allow me to do so.  I’m so confused.     My plan is the firstnet with att plan for medical providers, if that helps?

We'd love to help you get your smart home manager working again, @Zee7

Did you uninstall  and then reinstall the app?

To get started, we suggest that you clear cache on your device, uninstall the app on your device, refresh your device and then reinstall the app to see if that helps.

Let us know if this helps or if you need further assistance!

Thank you,

I just installed it for the first time. I cleared things as much as I could and refreshed things. And still no luck.
