No wires, and no support to match

Cat Mad My wireless connection on my PC keeps cutting out and the only way to get it work again is to disconnect and then re-connect the USB wireless receiver.  When I called support (or lack thereof) the tech told me they don't support that USB device they gave me, and I should just buy a new one.  Also that if the tech came out it could be a $90.00 service charge.  

 

I guess this is how AT&T racked up 6 billion in profit last year, intimidating customers with the potential of a fee to fix their problem and basically telling them they are on their own.  I hated comcast but I sure am beginning to miss them.

Personal device issues are on you and not AT&T. If there was a problem with your gateway and no device could connect at all, that would be different.

- Was your PC connecting ok previously, and this is a new issue?

- Did your connection problem start with any recent updates or Windows 10 upgrade?

- Have you checked for updated drivers for your USB wireless adapter?

- Can you hardwire connect your PC to your network with a Cat5 cable?

- Have you tried rebooting your gateway?

- Have you tried a wifi analyzer app to see if other nearby wifi networks are on the same channel as yours causing interference?

This is not a "personal device" this the set up they dumped on me because they were too cheap to have the tech run a cable to my PC.  There has been no upgrade to Windows 10, I am extremely wary of that as several friends and co-workers have done that and went through a couple days of kaka.  

 

I am sure they encourage the techs to push the wireless so they can get more installs per day.  

 

The only thing "on me" is picking AT&T, I thought they couldn't suck less than Commiecast but I sure was wrong.

It is not the AT&T installer's responsibility to provide cabling from your PC to the Residential Gateway.  As a courtesy to you, the installer provided you a wireless device for your PC with no warranty or support.

 

Get a cable, or get a replacement.  Cable will provide you with better long term service.

Without knowing any details, I would guess that your computer is turning off the USB port because it doesn't think it's in use.  When you unplug the USB stick and plug it back it, the PC will power the port back up for a while, then repeat the cycle.  You could try using a different USB port, or maybe going into your OS settings and disable the "turn off to conserve power" feature for the port where your USB stick is connected.  No guarantee either will work, but if your only concern is trying to make it work, its an attempt to make things work better than they are now.
