ONT Box/Cat5 Cable

I want to run a Cat5 cable to my detached shop. The shop is on the same side of the house as the ONT box is. My question is, can I add a splitter where the Cat5 cable to the house is connected? By adding a splitter at this point allows me to run a Ethernet cable a short distance to my shop and add a router.

Then again there's different types of CAT6. Like 6A, then there's shielded, unshielded and shield pair. Personally, I think CAT6A would be way overkill for residential use. Used to feel the same about CAT6, but since it's now about the same price as CAT5E I guess whatever you want. CAT5e is perfectly fine for residential, unless you're a super gamer with ultra high speed Internet.

No, you can't bridge the feed, you'd have to come out of one of the ethernet ports on the existing router. You say it's a short distance how about Wi-Fi extenders and using Wi-Fi in your garage.

Then will need to run an Ethernet cable from your gateway location to the shop.

I would hope that is not Cat5 but Cat5e at minimum. Though as that was over 20 years ago, I would consider something in the Cat6 range for a bit more current and available.

Possibly……not sure how well a wifi extender would work since it’s a metal building. I currently have one just inside the house about 15’ from the shop and I can’t get a good signal inside the shop.

Thanks for the input guys! I will plan on running a Cat6 from my gateway to the shop.
