Slow Download Speed

I just ran a speed test and the results say I have a download speed of 3.67 mbps, but when I actually download something it only downloads at a rate of 840kbps. What is causing this and how can I fix this issue.

First, you will need to provide further information:

  • What make/model/type of AT&T provided router/gateway do you have?
  • What speed service are you subscribed to?
  • What is the URL of the site you are having problems with?
  • What make/model/type and software are you using on your device?

There are many possibilities as to the cause and knowing this information will help.

As per multiple test sites, the URL you specified does not have any associated IP address.

I confirm.  There is no www.steam.com.  By any chance did you mean store.steampowered.com?

As for speed tests.  Use them as a general guide to see if there's a possible slow down of your connection.  Don't use them as an absolute measure and don't use only one.  While there are exceptions most speed tests tend to try to access the closest server to you (based on IP).  And they aren't true "real world" tests.

In the "real world" the source server may not be as close which may slow things down.  The server itself may slow things down (i.e., throttle) trying to load balance its users.  If you are watching TV and/or recording that takes away from your internet bandwidth as well.

Here's some of the speed test sites I use:

SpeedOf.Me

Speedtest.net  (this one lets you change the test server)

Speakeasy (limited selection of test server)

We overlapped.  You may have read my post before I finished updating it with speed test links.

You said " actually download something it only downloads at a rate of 840kbps."  Can you confirm that it is actually 840 kbps, and not 840 KBps?  The distinction is important, and I believe Steam displays the download rate in KBps.  840 kBps equates to something closer to 6.7 Mbps.

Yes I do mean store.steampowered.com, and I have used multiple speed tests I usually get a range of 2-5 mgps on the tests. But only 850kbps on store.steampowered.com

I found a potential DNS issue with the site you are trying to download from and that is the IP address will change depending on which DNS you are using. AT&T and Google list different IP addresses for the URL, each with terrible ping times. Please review attached document.

By default your PC will be using AT&T DNS. You may want to try using Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) or another.
