Smart Home Manager Speed Test Issue

Have "Internet 24" DSL plan. Ran smart home manager speed test. First test (on left side) says "testing Wi-Fi gateway speeds" The result is always "Hmmm... your speeds look a little off." and no numeric result. Chatted with the at&t automated help and ran the test from within the chat. It said the test failed. I assume this is a problem going from the gateway to the AT&T central point? The right side of the speed test ("Device Speed") works and gives a numeric result. I have rebooted my gateway several times. The wi-fi works inside the house albeit horribly ( can get speed of 20 something one minute and less than 4 a few minutes later. Never know what I will get on any given night). Anyway, how can I get the AT&T speed test to give me a number for the wi-fi gateway speed? Thank You.

Hi there, @rdhgog! We're here to help with your Internet speeds and the speed test.

You mentioned running the speed test in the AT&T Smart Home Manager. If you haven't already, try using our online Internet speed test instead. This can help us to determine if there is an issue with the Smart Home Manager, or if it's more widespread than that.

In addition to that, we recommend checking out our article that covers optimizing your Internet speed. Here are just a few of the tips we suggest to help improve your device speeds:

  • Reboot devices regularly to clear system errors.
  • Exit streaming apps after watching videos or listening to music.
  • Set auto-updates on apps, gaming consoles, and PCs to run when your network isn’t busy.
  • Update anti-virus programs, drivers, firmware, and computer and device software.
  • Replace older Wi-Fi devices with newer, faster technology.
  • Turn off or disconnect devices you're not using.
  • Move Wi-Fi devices closer to your gateway.
  • Add a Wi-Fi extender to strengthen and expand your coverage.
  • Try using wired connections when you stream, game, and video conference.
  • Place your Wi-Fi gateway in a central location away from obstructions.

Let us know if this helps. We may need to move this conversation to a more private space so that we can get our DSL team involved on this.

Thanks for the response, ATTHelp. I apologize for saying "Smart Home Manager". I actually was running the online speed test when getting that message. I am looking for some sort of help beyond the usual boilerplate suggestions for the following reasons. I have had this "internet 24" DSL for a number of years. From the start, it was very steady for a long time. It has gotten much flakier in the recent past year or so. I understand that one will get slower speeds than 24 as more people crowd on, however I would think that would be more of a gradual slowing; not being 24 one night and 2.8 the next night . Also, as more and more people leave DSL (for cable or fiber), I would think DSL would actually become more steady. My speed is good one night and nearly zero the next or good one hour and bad the next. It does just gradually go down as more people come on. I have done some of the canned suggestions; such as rebooting the gateway, turning off devices, etc. I think this is more of an issue between the gateway and AT&T central point; not an issue in my house. I say that because the error message on the online speed test is on the portion that is testing between my gateway and AT&T. I'd to know if you can test that from you end and see why my online speed test is saying that? Thank You.

Hey @rdhgog, let's look into why your Internet service is slowing down.

We see that you have already tried the basic troubleshooting, so we can skip that part. In order to further help with getting you into your email account, we'll need to meet in a Direct Message. Please check your Direct Message inbox (it's the chat icon next to the bell icon in the upper right corner of the Forums).

We look forward to hearing from you.

Gateway model?

Bonded pair or single pair?

post stats from 192.168.1.254 please

There were (2) internet 24 available 6+ years ago.

The more common is Uverse FTTN SINGLE PAIR 24/3, 24 down, 3 up… mostly F cards

This was top speed before bonded pairs became available offering internet 45/6 and 75/8.

Uverse IPTV would have been an option.

Today these speeds would be 25/5, 50/10, 75/20 on K or N cards with bonded.

The less common is Uverse ADSL2+, only as bonded pair 24/2, that is two 12/1 lines combined.

No Uverse IPTV option. I suspect if ATT fails it is because of LOW upload.

In both cases the upload is low, if upload gets saturated the download speeds will drop. Uploads could be drop box, file backup from device(s), camera(s) sending pics/video, etc.

As all bandwidth is shared, running a speed test with other devices in use is consuming the bandwidth… want to run with only one device in use ideally hardwired to gateway with Wi-Fi turned off.

Thanks, "My Thoughts" My main question was regarding no numeric result on the part of the AT&T on-line speed test that says "testing Wi-Fi gateway speeds" The result is always "Hmmm... your speeds look a little off." I assume this pertains to the route from gateway to AT&T central office and is not a problem with anything inside my house (though it could be producing the problems inside the house). I was trying to see if I could get the speed test fixed and see if that would solve the speed issues inside the house.

As to the speed issues inside the house (which most of your thoughts seem related to), I hear you regarding the upload/download/bandwidth being all one and related. I would expect the speed coming in to my gateway to be affected by that in the form of various slowing of my speed, however it seems that I should not be seeing these gigantic and abrupt changes from one night to the next from that. Monday night (last night), I was getting a steady good speed in the 20s all night. The previous night it was like in the 2s or less. This type of change happens on various nights. This is with the same devices on. I can get any speed from nothing to 24 on any given night. I have trouble believing that there would be so much uploading/downloading at certain times as to drop my speed to next to nothing (especially with more and more people supposedly dropping DSL)

In answer to your questions:

Gateway=NVG589
Not sure about bonded pairs. How would one tell?
What stats would you want from the gateway URL?

Thanks again,

ACE - Professor

That gateway has a broadband tab.  Post whatever you can from there.  Use a wired computer if possible.  Also while you’re in the management console, there’s a built-in speed test you can run.  If the electrical circuit to the gateway is poor, the error logging should show it.

As a prior employee, my advice is get a new provider and don’t look back. They will refute valid speed tests and will never really solve your problem, which is sadly and simply a sub-standard delivery of service.

Front panel of gateway, middle area has a Broadband 1 and Broadband 2 LEDs.

If only BB1 is on your single pair 24/3 if both lights on your bonded pair with most likely ADSL2+ service.

If you have or had Uverse IPTV your VDSL FTTN 24/3.

Had appointment for AT&T tech to come out and check the line. Before that I received a text saying that it was already fixed. I checked and the online speed test that previously errored was now working. My speed was good tonight so I cancelled the tech. Whatever AT&T did on their end has it fixed -for now.  Future nights will tell if it is a real, consistent thing. Sincere thanks to all on this forum for their interest and suggestions.
