Cannot connect my @att.net email to outlook 365 on my desktop

I have been using my att.net email on Outlook 365 downloaded on my computer for a number of years.  After being away from my computer for a few days, outlook would not download my new emails.  I could get them on my Iphone but not the desktop.  I tried changing passwords, even tried deleting the account on outlook but I get the following error-

"we couldn't log on to the incoming (IMAP) server.  Please check your email address and password and try again"

What am I missing?

I have been using Icloud storage as a backup and so my iphone calendar and outlook calendar are synced and easy to use.  Any suggestions (once my email issue is resolved) what cloud backup and calendar would be the easiest to use and be accessible on all my devices?

Let's get you back into your email, @dbn0405!

When you attempted to add the account back to outlook, did you use a secure mail key? This is a 16 character passcode that will take place of your current email password when logging into email apps, such as Outlook.

If you've used one previously, we recommend deleting that one and making a new one to use during the sign in.

You can create one using these steps:

  1. Go to your myAT&T ProfileSign in, if asked.
  2. Scroll to My linked accounts, select the email account that needs a secure mail key.
  3. Scroll to Secure mail key, select Manage secure mail key.
  4. Choose the email address that you’d like to use, if you have more than one.
  5. Select Add secure mail key. Enter a nickname for the secure mail key to make it easy to recognize.
  6. Choose Create secure mail key.
  7. Select Copy secure mail key to clipboard. Make a note of your secure mail key  for further updates.
    • For security purposes, the secure mail key only displays until you select OK
    • If you lose or forget the secure mail key, you can always create new secure mail keys.
  8. Select OK.
  9. Go to your preferred email app, replace the existing password with your secure mail key. For an IMAP account, delete the existing password for both the IMAP and SMTP servers. Replace them with your secure mail key.

Good to know: Each device you use to access your email will have its own secure mail key.

Let us know if these steps help! If not,w e ahve a few more things we can try.

We'd be glad to help you set up your email, GTS1992.

To fix the server error message, make sure that you're using the correct server settings. You can Get AT&T email server settings from our website.

We also recommend troubleshooting with our Login and Email Solutions article:

  • Test using webmail - If you're able to sign in to your email via the web, the issue points to the app or mailbox you're using.
  • Mailboxes - We recommend using the latest version. Updates and changes may prevent it from working properly.
  • Rebuild your mailbox profile - In some instances, rebuilding the profile fixes some issues, but you may lose email doing this.
  • Change your settings from POP to IMAP.
  • Client issues - If you're using POP, you must now use IMAP. There was a recent change, which this article explains further.
  • Multiple email, one client - Please note, each email requires either a secure key or OAuth to be set up. Check out Microsoft's support page on how to set up multiple emails.
  • Reset your secure key - This has helped resolve issues in the past, especially when signing in to another client or troubleshooting your current one.

Please keep in mind that AT&T does not officially support or troubleshoot mailboxes/clients such as Outlook.

Let us know if you need further assistance, and we'll look for another to fix the server error message.
