If I don’t get to the phone in time the answering machine starts to pick up. Is it not possible to interrupt the answering machine and answer the phone?

If you pick up the phone it should connect, but depends how far into the recording it is. What type of phone system are you talking about? Have you adjusted the number of rings to answer? You sure it's your answering machine and not the phone company supplied voicemail.
