U-Voice Spoofing Scam

I have getting a lot of robocall scams asking for my credit card number over the years with ATT home phone. For the most part I ignored them, but they just keep on calling. They have been aggressively changing numbers and area code identical to mine. These “spoofing” scam artists even spoof my own home phone number and ID. I am scared that they have my contacts and called someone I know with my impersonating number. Why hasn’t AT&T doing something to prevent this? There has to be some tracking in these over the internet spoofing calls to prevent this. It’s getting extremely frustrating that I want to get rid of ATT home phone.

Anyone with a digital phone connection (ISDN BRI or PRI) to the PSTN can give whatever originating phone number they desire.  It's in the design of the digital interface and enforcement is rather problematic.  VOIP is even worse.  Even if AT&T were to stop their customers from originating such calls, that wouldn't stop customers of other companies from doing it.

But AT&T should be able to prevent invalid phone numbers from coming into their customers.  You keep a phone log for your customers.  You should also be able to identify a invalid phone number,  that's your business isn't.  AT&T needs to step up and do something.

And how are they supposed to know if the phone number is valid or not.  Granted "1" isn't valid, but others are.  And you can legitimately use a number that isn't on that particular account.  For example, say I have AT&T local service and a Toll Free number from Verizon.  I can give my caller ID on my AT&T local service as the Toll Free number from Verizon.  That's perfectly legitimate so AT&T has to allow that number to originate in its network, even though its not a number it issued.

It would be easier to fix if AT&T still owned the entire phone network, but we're not going back there.
