Landline Phone Number

Why can't I use the same number I have for my landline when I switch from Spectrum to AT&T?

I could see that the ordering system for POTS is not set up to take a port order.  They just don't want to get new POTS customers, and so there's no reason to have updated the system to handle it porting when porting became a thing.  I don't know, I haven't tried, and it might even matter which old RBOC's area the home is in.

If you're serious about this, file an FCC porting complaint and maybe the Office of the President can help you.

OR, to take a fresh side look at this... you could port the number to some cell service, then port it to Google Voice (GV doesn't accept ports directly from landline/voip).  On Google Voice, forward the old number to the new POTS number.  At last check, Google Voice doesn't cost anything.  You've just introduced a little bit of routing that could go wrong on incoming calls.

Did you ask AT&T to port your number from Spectrum?  If not, why didn't you?  If you did, and they said they couldn't, did they say why they couldn't?  Is your number still active on Spectrum right now?

I asked and didn't get a straight answer. They offered to use the same number for a wireless phone thru them, and said they aren't upgrading their landlines any the prices are going up monthly.

So... is the problem getting "a landline" at all, or is it keeping the same number you have with Spectrum when getting that "landline?"  I'm using quotes here because "landline" means different things to different people.  To some it means a copper pair to the CO, ala Plain Old Telephone System.  To some it means something that's not a cell phone (so the definition includes VOIP).  What service is AT&T proposing to give you, AT&T Phone (a VOIP solution) or something else?

If the number is important to you, it may make sense to switch to another VOIP provider who is not going to make you jump through hoops to order their service and port your number to it.

The problem is not getting a landline, it's using the same phone number that exists with Spectrum on the AT&T landline (plain old telephone system). It just doesn't seem like it should be a big deal. She has used the same number for the past 25+ years and will have to adjust. (She's 83 years old and is set in her ways)...
