One group member can’t receive texts from one other member

Phones A and B stopped receiving text messages from one particular contact C in a group text message.

C can receive MMS from A; only messages the other direction are affected.

Also, phone A can exchange SMS with contact C one-on-one; only MMS is affected.

Both new and existing groups are affected.

Other members D and E of these groups can send and receive messages with A, B, and C normally. In particular, D and E can see messages from C that A and B cannot see and tell A and B about them.

A and B are both iPhones, but they do not use iMessage for these group text messages. C and D do not use iPhone.

I’m not aware of phones besides A, B, and C affected.

The problem began when phones A and B migrated from a plan through a business to a plan through family. The problem may have started a few weeks sooner than the migration but was first noticed only a few hours after migration, suggesting the migration triggered the problem.

Both the original and new plans A and B used are AT&T unlimited plans.

Hi mottrd1! There are a couple of steps each affected device in this group chat can take in order to resolve that unexpected trend with sending and receiving messages between each other.

The phones that migrated from a business plan to a family plan should try resolving their experience by powering their devices off for 1 - 2 minutes before powering them on again. Restarting the devices refreshes a device's connection to the network which can resolve any trends that have developed.

Also, each affected device will want to clear the app cache and data of their messaging app. Doing this will reset the app to factory default settings. Clearing the cache simply clears temporary files. It won't erase login credentials, downloaded files, or custom settings.

To learn how to clear the app cache for your specific device, visit AT&T Device Support Center. Once the make and model of your device is chosen, select Troubleshooting followed by App Troubleshooting.

What's more, for Android devices in this chat, we invite you to check out the details under Two Fast Solutions and Group Messenger Settings when you visit Android Group Message Troubleshooting – Fixes From AT&T. These troubleshooting steps should restore your conversation as normal, before this trend began to develop between your devices.

Try this and let us know how it goes. If their experience persists then the owners of those devices will want to contact us here on AT&T Community Forums so that we can look into a definite resolution into their experience.

New information:

We tested a third recipient G who was in the family plan before A and B. Like A and B, device G also cannot receive MMS from C. The family plan type was upgraded when A and B migrated, so now the upgrade specifically rather than the migration is suspect. We do not know if G was able to receive messages from C before G's plan was upgraded.

Troubleshooting:

A is an iPhone, so I am not aware of a way to reset A's message app cache without also deleting the message history.

I powered off device A for about five minutes. I will update you when we power cycle C. I have not heard yet whether C is Android. (Perhaps I should rethink using buggy MMS to request that info!)

Hello mottrd1, we're here to he[p you with your MMS message.

We have a few questions.

  • Is the affected devices unlocked?
  • Is advance messaging enabled?

Let us know so that we can further troubleshoot.

Thank you for visiting AT&T Community Forums!

Cleaning up old thread:

Phone C was replaced, and since then phone A receives group texts from C normally.

Odd that a change in A’s plan triggered a problem and a change in C’s hardware cleared it.
