Phone settings for Cruise Package

Just came back from 1-week cruise to Western Caribbean on a Holland Line ship and the $100 AT&T Cruise Package was a waste. Much of the time I couldn't call, text, email. Tried all kinds of settings and sometime I received some emails and FB posts.  Couldn't, and still can't, find any directions on AT&T about how to set up my Airplane Mode, Cellular, Data Roaming, and Wifi while at sea.  Just got off call to AT&T International support and was told that while at sea I should have Airplane Mode OFF, Cellular ON, Data Roaming ON, and Wifi OFF.  Do you agree with this?  I have an International plan for when I am not at sea.  It's amazing that I can add the Cruise Package on my AT&T Account site, but can't find any clear directions about what my iPhone settings should be to use the package!

The cruise package allows you to connect to the cruise ships satellite cellular service to use talk text and data. You are limited to whatever service the cruise ship provides. AT&T does not control quality.   If you were unhappy with the connectivity on the cruise ship you should have complained to the cruise line. They are the ones who control what sort of bandwidth is available not AT&T.

The purpose of the cruise ship plan is to avoid the extremely high roaming pay per use costs.

You can calculate what you would have paid compared to the $100 by looking at your bill to see how much talk text and data you used compared to these prices

$3 a minute for phone calls, $0.50 for every text message sent $1.30 for every multimedia message sent, $2.05 per megabyte of data, that's over $2,000 per gig

During the cruise I was lucky a couple of times and was able to phone AT&T for help.  Two calls - two answers.  Called them after the cruise and got a 3rd reply, although this time it seemed plausible.  My plan offered free data, UP TO 1GB.

Thanks, Peterklein

Hello @peterklein, we are glad you contacted us regarding your cruise package, and we are happy to answer your question.

As the Ace rightly mentioned, while cruising onboard a ship, your service will depend on the ships ability to connect to a satellite which will provide network on international waters, when the device is connected to the ship's cellular network, "cellularatsea", "wmsatsea", "901-18" or "NOR-18" displays on the device. The ship turns off its cellular network when it is within 12 nautical miles from land and docked or tendered in port, at which point cellular service is provided via the nearest country. Added international day pass will help keep you off huge amounts of pay per use charges while the ship is docked. However, device settings will vary depending on the device make and model.

ATTHelp people - When someone logs on to their ATT site to learn about your Cruise Packages, why isn’t there information like that included in the support links you included here, or at least a link to that information?  You should also have information, or a link, explaining what your customer's phone settings should be for Airplane Mode; WiFi; Cellular; and Data Roaming.

I had the same experience!  Recently went on a cruise to Cozumel, Costa Maya, and Honduras on the Carnival Jubilee (which was supposed to be covered).  I tried every combination of settings (including those they prescribed to you), and nothing worked.  A friend who was with me also had the same experience. Complete waste of $100.  At one point, I was unable to access my bank account, and also couldn’t call them!  I had to go to the ship’s guest services and use their phone to get a call through to my bank!

Upon returning, I called AT&T, and they offered me a $25 account credit….not much considering I paid $100 😕.  I don’t recommend anyone purchase the AT&T cruise package.
