Picture messaging and data charges?
I recent switched from Sprint to AT&T and was under the impression that picture messaging was part of their unlimited text plan. I have unlimited talk and text with 1gb of data. I turned off the data because I dont really use it much. But apparently, (which i knew it needed data to send) MMS is not part of the unlimted texting, and in fact, counts against your data usage. So despite having unlimited texting, I'm also going to be charged on my data for sending pictures? Does it really count towards my data usage to send pictures of my daughter to her grandmother??

when you text is uses the wireless signal, not wifi. To send pictures requires data to be availabe, but the texting of photos does not count against data usage but is required.

I should restate...I knew it needed a data CONNECTION to send...not that it needed actual data to send. Apparently, I'm unable to send or recieve picture messages over my wifi connection at home either?

Sounds likes another way Apple screws you.
Looking at my usage reports for month to date and the total stated is 3366MB but when I total up the data amounts in the 3 hourly periods it comes to only 2,482MB. What else could this discrepancy be except Picture messages?

iMessage came out when data was slow, but unlimited and text was an extra charge. With the reverse being true, imessage has outlived its usefulness.
To see what used data on iPhone, open settings, cellular data. Dig in and see what is really using your data...

At&t technical support just confirmed sending picture messages does in fact count against your mobile data. They have lied to customers.

@PatriotVet Whoever you talked to is wrong. MMS messages do require cellular data to work but they do not count against your data plan. iMessages do count against your data plan if sent over the cellular network. Perhaps you misunderstood what you were told.
