Retrieve Text Messages from Airplane Mode

I was traveling for a week and had my iphone 15 on airplane mode. When I turned off the airplane mode, the text messages did not come through. Is there any way to retrieve the messages? Is there any way to prevent this from happening again?

Hi monamouhot, we hope everything is going well with you!

Let us help you retrieve your messages that were sent while on a plane and on Airplane mode on your iPhone 15 device!

Please make sure your device is still not on Airplane mode and that Do not disturb is turned off to ensure that messages will be able to come through. Also, ensure that iMessages is turned on to be able to receive messages from other iPhone users.

Other fixes that may help are:

  1. Checking our AT&T Coverage Map (https://www.att.com/maps/wireless-coverage.html?source=IC2Y0H0000000000L&wtExtndSource=wireless-map) and ensuring that your cellular data is turned on in settings since we need signal to send/receive messages.
  2. Power cycle your device and reset your network settings to refresh your connection to our towers. Go to Settings app>General>Reset>Reset newtork settings.
  3. Update your device software (https://www.att.com/support/article/wireless/KM1070617/) to the latest version to make sure you have the latest features and device protection options.
  4. Run a diagnostic test (https://www.att.com/support/wireless/) to check why you are unable to receive sent messages. You'll need to navigate to Fix my wireless>Connection>Text & messaging to get started or you can simply sign in to get a personalized experience.

We hope the above-mentioned troubleshooting steps alleviate your concern! Please do let us know if you require any further assistance.

How many were you expecting?  ATT only holds texts for a limited time.  Probably not the full week.

SMS/MMS messages are usually held for 72 hours before expiring and deleted. Don’t know the time frame for IMessage deletions.  If overseas you can use WiFi calling and connect to AT&T, this will enable the download of text message. I do each day while traveling overseas. If you have an unlocked phone and a local SIM WhatsApp can be used between you and individuals that have WhatsApp.
