Studying abroad In Italy - 4 months

I'd like to know if there are other options besides the $10 day pass for calling, txt, data while traveling internationally?  I will be  gone about 4 months and trying to understand what the options are to have service on my phone for calling, texting, data.

2 easy options.  The IDP, which is $10/day.  Maximum of $100 per billing cycle, or maybe $400-500 for 4 months.

Or, if the phone is unlocked and supports 2 lines (ie eSIM), buy a local SIM/number and use that for calls there, and disable all roaming on the ATT line and just use that to call back to the states using the data of the other eSIM or on wi-fi.

Another option is to go into airplane mode, enable wi-fi, and just do all your calling/text while on wi-fi. But that wouldn't give you data using cellular.

Perhaps the increase in the price of the international day pass might be the tipping point for you to make sure your phone is unlocked and buy local service. International day pass is going up from $10 to $12 either end of April or beginning of May.
