Letter from California Public Utilities Commission

That is a public hearing notice. They are looking to change a couple things. Would have to look into those applications for the specifics. Think of it like they are trying to pass a bill, change one, or have it expire.

So that is your chance to be part of the discussion for where you live.

Looks to me like they want to be released from the POTS service obligations. 

The problem is I live nowhere near any of these places.

I wish there was more information about what these 2 proposed changes mean to me.

I have Googled it, but I really cannot find anything. I am going to call the CPUC on Tuesday to see if they can tell me.

ATT is requesting to be released from its obligation of being the Carrier of Last Resort (COLR) in certain rural areas.  Most likely the rural locations are where the in-person public forum (ie. Clovis, CA; Ukiah, CA; and Indio, CA).  Basically, ATT doesn't want to offer service in those areas any longer.

They want to drop our landlines. After a bunch of research I found this:

Even though cell service is very spotty at my house they want to force me to give up my landline. I am not happy!

I also live in the middle of nowhere, I live 15 miles outside of town. I have no cell phone service in the valley I live in. It would be pretty bad as far as safety if we lost our landline. All I would have is wireless internet service that is not completely reliable. 

I tried calling the CPUC today and all I could get was a recording. I will try again. 

The links on the CPUC website for the "Proceeding Documents" are dead. I would like to read them. I emailed the webmaster, but there has been no response yet.

I'm not sure why @ATTHelp removed the link provided by @Vmacdona I read it and didn't see any personal information, just a PDF file which basically had the same information as other posted links. The bottom line all the LEC's are requesting to be released from the restrictions put on them as the carrier of last resort, and POTS line restrictions. VoIP, cell service and wireless home phone are currently your alternatives.  VoIP you need a good Internet connection, cell service you need a reliable carrier and wireless home phone requires a good cell phone signal. Those of you saying you don't have reliable cell service are posting on this board so I assume you have decent Internet service. If not consider Star Link as an Internet provider and use VoIP services. What's coming has been discussed for almost 20 years, it's time to move on and look into alternative sources for home phone service. 

We have a cabin in the wilderness with only landline service (no cell). It is not reasonable to obtain satellite service as the cabin can only be accessed during the summer. We are in our late 70s and the phone is for emergency.
