Carrier outage
I live in Augusta, Maine and I'm straighttalk customer for years now, and as always never have a problem. My friend who lives only 2 towns over, and her daughter, are experiencing horrible problems. She said her phone is f#@$ed. Her daughter has Verizon, she has US Cellular

OK, three different competitors with various levels of service in Maine... best you can do is recommend they change providers if their current company is having issues.
