Kyocera DuraXE E4710 firmware update issues, please help

Background info: The phone's software version is 1.005AT / the AT&T Address Book cloud connection attempt forces it's way into view every time I click on contacts - not very pleasant. / hotspot creation seems to be locked by software / I have a nearly new condition unlocked device that works fine otherwise.

- - - - - - - - - - - -

Upon selecting the option to update the firmware, the popup tells me it is indeed old and that I can proceed to get the update.

"Software Update

Processing...

The download for the software update will begin in a moment..."

[It just hangs there, and doesn't do anything. All I can do is exit that menu option. Reboots return it to that same screen. The online troubleshooter presents no useful information whatsoever.]

I have a fast connection speed, yet it hangs. But sometimes I get a message stating that no update is available for your device at this time. Then it says your software is up to date, you may check again in 23 hours 59 mins. I then have to wait another day, playing this silly game trying to turn off the AT&T Address book and enable the hotspot abilities that my provider says I have.

So here's my question: Is there some kind of cache that I could clear to make a fresh start on the install? Also, is it possible to download the firmware via Wi-fi or via a direct link. I could then connect the device to a PC via USB to install it. I prefer to not have to go surfing around for rogue copies of firmware to install with ADB. Do I need to put an AT&T sim in the phone to gain the right to fix this?

I believe its only right that leftover residue from the AT&T Address book (well intended at the time) be able to be cleared out of users phones and the process made easy by AT&T.

Thank You,

John

Solved my own problem.

I wound up having to (Edited per community guidelines) my DuraXE, which brought some advantages. Used king(Edited per community guidelines) (desktop) v3.5.0.1157, which initially failed twice till I unlocked the bootloader, then it got (Edited per community guidelines) immediately. But all this had to be done on a Win10 64-bit PC, as my Win7 32-bit netbook couldn't see the phone when issuing the 'abd devices' command. It just did nothing, even with the same drivers installed that I used on the Win10 machine.

I used the Universal ADB Driver, which is downloadable as an .exe and is named 'universaladbdriver_v6.0.exe' but internally its the latest Google ADB driver v11.00. I should note at this point that I tried seven (7) different drivers all claiming to work with this phone or 'family of phones'. Just use the above and put it on a 64-bit machine and it will probably be okay. I wrote up a detailed how to for myself in case I need to do it all again, just Private Message me and I'll give it to you.

You can install apps without (Edited per community guidelines) on the DuraXE, but finding those that can work with a non touchscreen is a trial and error kind of thing. I currently have 'GPS Status' installed, as well as Es FIle explorer, Cleaner by Augusto, and Qute terminal (good util for switching Kinguser over to SuperSU).

I figured out how to get rid of that annoying AT&T Address Book cloud connection attempt thing that pops up whenever you click contacts - and you don't need (Edited per community guidelines) to fix it. The fix sustains through all reboots, thus that misery is over. Search online for a free utility called 'Hidden Android Settings_v0.1' (look on Apkpure site) then go to Manage Applications. Then scroll over to the right to 'All' then find the running app "AAB sync" <-- that's the one! Just select the option to force it to stop, then disable. Problem solved. I could not get even one word of help from AT&T about stopping THEIR jammed-up updates. So I never had the option to resolve the problem via an OTA update as som may try to suggest. I had to figure it out myself.

The good thing, the upshot is that in not helping people with AT&T phones they force people to learn on their own. So unexpectedly, I learned how to then got (Edited per community guidelines). Now I can make internal changes as well as install apps that I couldn't install because of the bootloader being locked.

I hope this helps someone.

Metta,

John

When reading my last post, please replace "(Edited per community guidelines)" with the word r-o-o-t, or perhaps r~o~o~t, or maybe rooowt, or maybe ruuut and you will get the picture. Somehow that word has become flagged as profanity in AT&T's world.

I tried the procedure outlined by "lonvs" above to turn off AT&T Address Book and almost succeeded, but the error INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_INCONSISTENT_CERTIFICATES keeps getting raised when the "adb install" of "Hidden Android Settings" fails.

I would private message "lonvs" as suggested above, but the PM feature does not appear to currently exist in AT&T Community Forums.

Does anyone have a suggestion?  I believe the Security and Developer settings are all correct.  Also, adb appears to basically work other than for installing an apk, due to the inconsistent certificate error above.  I do not think the app already exists, as it does not appear able to be uninstalled (the closest installed app appears to be com.android.settings).

I have figured out a fix that doesn't need r~o~o~t or anything like that. However, it does require a computer.
Enable Developer mode on the phone by clicking:
"Menu" from the home screen. Choose Settings-->System-->About Phone.
Scroll down to "Build Number" and hit the "ok" button a few times until it tells you that you're a developer.
Back up one menu and go into "Developer Options".
Enable USB Debugging. (I also enabled OEM Unlocking but I don't think this is necessary)
Next install the Universal ADB drivers onto your computer. Google will help you find them. (I used the ones from clockworkmod but I'm sure any of them would be fine.)
Connect your phone and ALLOW any of the prompts that come up.
Open up an administrative command prompt/terminal and then type "adb devices". Make sure you can see a device listed. It'll look something like:
* daemon started successfully *
6689467283      device

Next run the command:
adb uninstall --user 0 com.borqs.aabsync
You should see a "success" below.
If so run the command: adb reboot
Your phone will reboot and you can disconnect the phone from the computer at this point.
Give it a moment to start up and then hit the "down" arrow on the keypad as normal. You will likely see an empty contact list. Press the key for "Options" then choose "Contacts to display" and choose wherever you have the contacts saved. Let it load them in and you're done.

Hope this helps someone!

David17117 Thank you I am going to try this.  I wish that phone developers would continue to manufacture phones that are durable but they don't.  I got this phone new a couple of months ago but in reality it is at least 4 years old and as you say AT&T has abandoned it's customers when they don't provide updates for all of the phones that are still in use when they make a major change like making the online contacts defunct.

Wow, david11717, thank you a ton for sharing.  Your procedure worked to finally remove the AT&T Address Book ("adb uninstall --user 0 com.borqs.aabsync", then Contacts > Options > select what to show).  Superb, this really makes using the device better.  Thanks again!

I don't have the AT&T address book problem any more - I went round and round with AT&T tech support about it and finally they had me return the phone and they sent me another one and everything seemed fine.

But now, there's this looming network change (they're dropping 3G coverage) and, although my phone is listed on their list of compatible phones ( compatible list )    that will work on the new network, there is an asterisk ("*") next to the DuraXE E4710 entry that says "* Indicates devices that may require a software update ... "    When I checked the phone's software information, it showed Version 1.005AT;   an AT&T information page about updating the DuraXE software ( Update Info ) shows the current software version to be 1.215AT.

So, it looks like I'll have to go through the update but, I am reading how there are many people who have tried to do the update as per the user manual instructions and it didn't work - a couple of them indicate that their phone locked up in the midst of the install and never recovered.

My question is, he anyone here been able to successfully update their DuraXE (E4710) by just using the phone's built in update option within it's setting menu - or do you have to go through this procedure with the "Developer Options" and the ADB driver?

When I was in the process of troubleshooting the phone, I could not get the automatic update to work at all. If you can find the firmware download, I'm sure you could push it the manual way. That being said, I could not find the firmware download anywhere.

I would like to PM IONVS about the step by step instructions for uploading the latest version of the AT&T software to my DuraEx 4710 phone.  My son-in-law is an IT guy and he got rid of the annoying message for the "Contacts", but we haven't been able to get the phone to update.  I called Kyocera and they said it is an AT&T issue.  I went to AT&T and the guy there said there is no way he could do the R o o t thing.  I know this is an old post but maybe someone can walk me through this.  I am not a computer guy by any means, but I might be able to do this with some guidance.  I switched from Verizon to AT&T because Verizon stopped working at our vacation home.  I fear that without the updates to the software, perhaps AT&T won't work.  BTW, I got my Father-in-law the same phone, and his updated.  Thanks.

@Fowl1 as far as I'm aware, no one has found the firmware update files for the phone. However, you won't need a firmware update for the phone unless you're having issues with it. Whatever firmware that's on it will work fine. The only thing you may want to consider doing is to go through and remove the AT&T Address Book using the steps I posted earlier on this post.
