Possibility of network-unlocking brand-new 2006 Motorola Razr V3 GoPhone?

Hello! I have a brand-new, never-activated GSM Razr V3 from 2006 that I was hoping to unlock and send to a friend in Europe who has access to 2G. I tried the self-service At&T device unlock, but it wouldn't work. I assume this is because the GoPhone prepaid account was never set up, and 6 months of prepaid service is required before a device is eligible to be unlocked. I'm not sure, though. Before calling AT&T and getting told "no", I thought I'd check with the knowledgeable people here!

At 18 years old, the phone is too old to be activated on AT&T, so I see no reason for them to not unlock it at this point...

Also, maybe it will work with a new SIM card?

Any help or advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

“No” is answer.  The phone is too old to use on the network and AT&T wont unlock it.  Also, it doesn’t meet the unlocking eligibility requirements because it doesn’t have 6 months of active service.  Finally, a phone that old and never used on the network almost certainly doesn’t have its IMEI in the unlocking database.  You can try the online unlocking database, but be prepared for rejection.

Calling them probably won’t work if you’re not an AT&T customer, and even if you are, they’ll likely just tell you to use the online portal.

If you believe that they should unlock you old phone, then file a BBB or FCC complaint.

@dwill05 I figured the chances of unlocking this were slim, but the phone model/info did populate when I entered the IMEI in the unlock portal last week. This is what gave me hope that someone might still be able to access and unlock it - despite the request being rejected online.

No big deal - just a fun thing for a friend who is an electronic geek and still has access to 2G for another year.

Thanks so much for the reply. I appreciate your time!

Hey there @BPlease,

Thank you for reaching out to us. We are here to help you in any way possible. We understand the PREPAID device is old which you can still unlock, but it has to meet below-mentioned eligibility criteria.

Your device:

  • Is an AT&T phone or device and isn’t active on another AT&T account.
  • Has a paid-off installment plan:
    • Paid through your monthly bill: Submit your unlock request at the start of your next bill period.
    • Paid off early: The wireless number assigned to the device must be active for at least 60 days.
  • Was paid in full when you bought it (it was not purchased on an installment plan). You must wait 60 days from your purchase date to submit an unlock request.
  • Doesn’t have a past-due account balance. Make a payment to bring your account current. It will take 24 hours for your payment to post.
  • Hasn’t been reported as lost, stolen, or involved with fraud.
  • Is an AT&T Prepaid® phone with a Prepaid SIM that has had paid service for at least six months. You must submit your unlock request using the most recent version of the AT&T Device Unlock app.

No problem.  I suspect the phone ID database is different than the unlocking database, which is why it populated with the model.  There are tons of sites out there, like IMEI checkers, that you can plug an IMEI in and get the phone model.
