Use iPhone in South Africa

Hi. I hope you are well. If I purchase an iPhone 15 pro max from AT&T, will I be able to MTN SIM card when I return to South Africa and use the phone there?

The phone you buy from AT&T will be locked to AT&T, so it can’t be used with another carrier unless it’s unlocked first.  Requirements must be met, including minimum time of service on AT&T, before the phone is eligible for unlocking as listed here.

Save yourself the hassle and just buy an unlocked phone direct from Apple.

iPhone cost the same coming from Apple as it does coming from AT&T, or Verizon, or T-Mobile. The difference is phones sold in the United States purchased through a service provider are locked for at least 60 days, or at most until the phone is 100% paid off. I know you're probably looking at those deals on the phones for a discounted price. Those do not apply to you. In order to get those special prices you have to sign up and pay for 36 months of service and the phone remains locked until paid off in 36 months
