You Ruined My 1520

I spent 2 hours today wondering why my 1520 wasn't charging when I put it on the wireless charger that AT&T gave me with my 920. Nothing happened for 2 hours. Turns out, nothing would ever happen because the masterminds in the AT&T finance department decided that money was greater than customers.

I'm looking for a way to enable QI charging on my 1520 without having to purchase new accessories for this duracell powermat crap. Since the accessories sold on AT&T and Microsofts site are all QI based what exactly was the plan here? To screw with customers and exploit your virtual monopoly?

Like I said, I'm looking to enable QI charging on my phone and also just voicing my opinion so that AT&T knows how STUPID this is. I'm not the only one being decieved here either. There are numerous reviews on other prolific sites including Pocketnow, Amazon and Endgadget that call out the foolishness of this implementation.

Did you decide that Windows Phone was so low marketshare that you could simply do what you wanted and force the customers to conform? Did you think that Apple would sell more phones if the 1520 customers returned all of theirs? Did you expect us to purchase second rate charging equipment because it'd earn you extra money?

I have no clue, but I'd like an answer.

AT&T supports the Power Matters Alliance, which uses a different wireless charging technology. It's probably not what you want to hear, but according to PocketNow, this is the AT&T's response to your complaint:

Charging on the go represents a major convenience for consumers and with new wireless charging standards and participating device and service providers, it’s becoming a reality. We fully support the concept of an industry standard for wireless power and believe it has to expand beyond the home and office.

In an effort to move toward making this a reality for consumers worldwide, we’ve placed our support for the public ecosystem roll out led by Power Matters Alliance (PMA). The PMA continues to expand membership and is building a strong ecosystem for wireless charging. The PMA solution is already installed at leading coffee shops, airports, stadiums, restaurants, gyms and more, which enables customers to wirelessly charge their phone while on the go.

Creating an effortless user experience for consumers is a high priority for us and it means ensuring every detail of compatibility has been well thought out and tested before products are made available. We’ve asked our device suppliers to embed PMA certified wireless charging capability into their devices beginning in 2014. In the interim, we are working with our accessory partners to develop solutions as quickly as possible.

Today, our customers are already enjoying PMA accessories for several devices in our portfolio. The Nokia Lumia 1520 will support the PMA standard via a wireless charging accessory available around launch time.

yeah i too was pretty disappointed about it when i learned that att 1520s dont support qi wireless charging, instead they have partnered with PMA, which i believe is quite unlike qi charging - requires special wireless charging case/cover.  Really disappointed with ATT for removing qi and forcing PMA on customers.

See, I don't give a thought to what format is used. Here is what tears my brains logic nerves (replaced because I apparently used a bad word 😞 ) me off and why I'm not here yelling at AT&T's product managment and just the company in general.

Wireless charging was physically built into the 1520. It isn't anymore. This means that I can't physically use almost any of the accessories made up for the 1520. All the cases now need to support charging. But since every other 1520 does support it no ones making those cases. Worse, all the accessories like the JBL Power Speaker are still advertised (even on AT&T's site) as supporting the 1520. But they don't.

What I'm trying to say here is, AT&T should provide 1) an adapter to switch back to Qi wireless. 2) modified accessories (ALL OF THEM) so they support whatever the format is. Furthermore, all 1520 owners should recieve a free wireless charging case complementary for this stupid idea.

It's a pity that AT&T don't read these forums. They'd realize how stupid they are.

Unfortuantely its more of a pain to add the QI coil as it involves replacing some of the internals of the phone.

The 1520.3 international version of the phone is QI enabled without even having to have a cover.

I am pretty dissapointed that AT&T did this, its not their job to pick a standard, its the customers job and from what I have seen of the QI charging pads / stands vs. the PMA pad (yes, there are two out there)  QI is the winning standard.  I have invested pretty heavily in QI as my 920 came equiped with it and AT&T gave a free charging pad when I purchased it.  Well... now that all is junk once AT&T releases a phone that is not a HUGE monstrosity like the 1520 (personal choice, the phone is way to dang big)  for me to upgrade to.

I believe AT&T is not going to reply for all this- they made a very bad decision and ended up with many unhappy customers atleast in windows phone department. I got to know about about ATT's disabling all qi charging right after i got the 1520. I even ordered a qi wireless pad which i had to cancel. REALLY BAD MOVE BY AT&T.

And even thinking of buying a wireless charging cover to charge the phone wirelessly doesnot even make sense when i dont want a cover on my phone. QI is simple; put your phone on the charging plate. Why could not ATT atleast stick to the original idea of just putting the phone as it is on a charging pad?

ATT IF YOU ARE READING THIS, I AM A VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED AND UNSATISFIED CUSTOMER. Please do explain why you disabled QI wirelss charging and opted for the senseless PMA standard.

I personally have been filing support tickets and sending Better Business Bureau complaints their way. This thread will stay alive until they remedy the situation.

No. That plate uses the Qi standard for wireless charging. If you want to wirelessly charge your 1520 you'll need the wireless charging shell by at&t and a new charging player that supports the power matters alliance standard.

So where do I find the shell?

It should be in AT&Ts store. I recommend submitting a support ticket though. If you have the time that is. Just make sure that the format is PMA and you should be good. This goes for your plate and shell. You should also be able to return the phone and get an unlocked GSM version from another carrier and bring it to at&t. That should let you use your old wireless charger.
