When were they ever doing this? Other than for military deployment, AT&T doesn’t forgive outstanding balances on devices. After the 14 day return period, you’re responsible for paying for it. AT&T doesn’t want your old used device back.

I’ve heard of that happening once in a blue moon when the user of that phone has tragically passed sometimes AT&T will forgive the balance with the return of the device.

If an account owner passes away and death certificate can be provided, AT&T can pass the expenses on to the estate. But they have been known to waive any balances related to the account owners phone. If there are other phone numbers on the account that users which to keep, all that can be transferred to a new responsible account owner, a credit check is typical.
It's not normal, or required that AT&T waive the balance for an account user. They're not on the account, they have no ownership, and therefore no proof can be provided to someone has passed away. It would be entirely at AT&T's discretion to believe someone or not believe someone and waive charges.

That’s only under certain conditions if you were on certain plans prior to a specific increase a year or more ago. So what’s your question? If you are covered by that situation, then turn your phone it and get your balance forgiven.

If you're aware of it online, then why are you asking us? You supposed to be calling the 800 number. It's not like AT&T put this information on the internet and then expects you not to take advantage of it.

I had not found the article at the time of initial post, hence the question, does that make sense?
I'm surprised you were not aware of this information as you seem to be heavily involved with AT&T, I guess we all can learn something.

Dude you made a cryptic post about AT&T waiving phone installments, with no further elaboration.
There's at least 3 times in the last 12 months that they have raised prices and giving people an out...
And people ask about turning in phones and getting out of installments on a regular basis just because they don't want to pay for them anymore.
Old computer saying garbage in garbage out. Ask better questions you'll get better answers
