Will I lose my number at the end of my contract?

I'm currently added onto a family plan but my contract is up on the 1st of September.    I'm planning on changing service to Verizon.   When my contract is up on the 1st, can I wait until the 2nd to go and port my number over or will I automatically lose that number on the 1st?
