AT&T Doesnt accept military ID?

I went to the AT&T Store in Spanish Fork, Utah on Wednesday to do a return of a defective pair of ear buds that came with my new phone.  I was sent there by AT&T customer service when I spoke with them about returning the buds, since I wanted to make sure there was a chain of custody involved...these are $200 and I want to be certain they cant just vanish in the mail.  When the young lady asked for my ID, I gave her my DD-2765 (Identification and Privilege Card issued to 100% Disabled Veterans).  She wasnt able to simply scan it in like a drivers license (Which is why I use this card for ID at businesses', it is illegal for the majority of companies to copy and keep "On File").  She went and asked her supervisor what to do and he told her to refuse the ID.  I got pretty by god upset at that.  I have been a customer for years of AT&T and just needed to return defective merchandise.  He continued to refuse to accept my military ID and told me to go to a "Corporate" store 30 miles away to do my return.  On my way out the door, he even chose to make a comment about my weight.

I have called Customer Service.  They gave me the email that (they say) belongs to the District Manager.  I emailed him yesterday and have received no response (I would be satisfied with a simple "I have received your complaint and am looking into it).

I am REALLY looking hard for a reason to keep AT&T at this point.  I am sure there are plenty of other companies out there that wont treat a disabled veteran like crap.

If he told you to go to a "Corporate Store," implying that where you were wasn't a corporate store, then you were not a place owned and operated by AT&T, but one owned by an AT&T Authorized Reseller.  AT&T does little if anything to constrain or punish bad behavior on its resellers.  You should note the actual business name of this reseller (it should be on the door and on literature they give you) and be sure you're complaining to that store's management, and if you file a BBB complaint, make it against that business.

All that said, if you purchased those buds from AT&T, then you really should return them to a Corporate AT&T store and get a receipt.

that was an authorized retailer they can make their own policies whether to accept an id, sell you merchandise, you would need to contact the owner of the store, but your only option is to take it to a corporate store.

Customer service and I discussed that yesterday.  While they can make their own policies in some cases, they may not observe a discriminatory policy.  Refusing a valid ID is discrimination.  As long as AT&T's name is on the store, AT&T is ultimately responsible for any discrimination practiced by their stores.  Can an "Authorized Retailer" only choose to sell to people of a certain race or religious practice?  Unless you are with AT&T Customer Service, please dont try and excuse their actions.

Jeffer, there was nothing outside the store that showed who owns it.  I asked for a business card and was literally laughed at.  This store seems to have a long history of lousy customer service (5 reviews viewable on AT&T's page for them, 3 are 1 star)  AT&T needs to review if they want to allow this franchise to continue to be operated in this manner and they wont do that unless people speak up here or to their Customer Service directly.  Silence is consent.

Yes, I live 60 miles from the nearest store (the one in Spanish Fork).  Also, I was specifically sent to that store by AT&T Customer Service to do my return (they even gave me the address to that specific store), as I said previously.  I didnt just wander in off the street, I was sent to that store by AT&T.

Sounds like it is not that they refused the ID because it was the 100% DAV card, but that it wasn't able to be scanned to verify it. This is something I have heard of with TSA at the airport as well since there is an update it must catch up on.

However I would check some info on the card. If it has the SSN then it needs to be replaced as a lot of those cards do not scan anymore as replaced by the DOD ID to protect against identity theft.

If it has a printed expiration since 2020JAN01, so beginning of last year, the card is still valid across the DoD, but if the printed date shows expired then nobody outside a DoD entity is required to accept it as that extension is only for anything DoD connected (going onto a base, PX, Commissary, etc.)

So if it is a situation with older card with the SSN or the recent special extensions, check with your local DEERS/RAPIDS site to get it replaced. The current extension (3rd) through 2022JAN31 is not mandatory like the prior ones, so some sites have gotten approval to start replacing the cards for change in printed data (expiration date, name change/correction, etc.).

Being an authorized retailer means AT&T has less control over their individual policies compared to a corporate store. So that is where a BBB complaint becomes the next step, if not one of the card situations mentioned above.

It is the new style and has no expiration date (INDEF).  The corporate store had no problem accepting it, they just were not able to do the quick and easy scan, they had to actually (gasp) enter the information themselves.  Personally, I dont care if it makes them do more than scan..it is for my protection that these cards can not be copied or saved by a business.

You got the new USID released a few months ago, not an old Teslin card? Then the issue would be not able to be scanned. If they have the option to input the info without scanning, then I agree they should have as that is a Federally issued ID.

If anybody has an older card, they should check the back as INDEF on front but may have an expiration date on back (for when medical status changes). Lots of people missed those or were confused by it, something that was fixed on the new cards.
