Deployment phone

Hello, my son in law is deploying soon, and still has a balance due on his phone. He was told that his remaining balance would be paid off and the phone will be unlocked for him to use while overseas. Is there anyway to get more information on that?

Hello Jpinkney99, we're here to answer your questions about military deployment.

You can cancel or reactivate wireless service for U.S. military or service members. Thanks to the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) and state laws, if eligible, you:

  • Pay no Early Termination Fees (ETF) upon cancellation of your wireless service.
  • Can ask us to hold your number for up to 39 months so long as you reactivate your service within that time frame.

The Device must meet unlock requirements before being unlocked.

Please feel free to reach back out if you have any other questions or concerns.

@Jpinkney99 Your son-in-law has to be the account owner to qualify for this. His pre-deployment briefing should be covering this.

The phone does not automatically get unlocked, he still must request the unlock using the unlock portal:

https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/

ATTHelp is incorrect about the phone needing to meet unlock requirements. The normal requirements are waived for deploying military.

AT&T does not seem to be willing to work with our device members.  My son’s bill is constantly increasing due to his deployment status and use while deployed.  They should have a special plan in place that allows them to contact select family members at no charge, while serving our country on deployment missions.

AT&T provides options to cancel with no penalty and have the phone unlocked in case of deployment. He could then use a local provider to save money.
