Military Suspension
Hi,
I am an active duty Army soldier.
I deploy to overseas location next month for 12 months, and I have my military order.
After receiving the order, I traded my old iPhone ($1000 credits) to get a new iPhone ($1200).
Can I unlock the new iPhone and suspend it while I am on overseas location? That way, I will be able to use the new iPhone with other carrier in overseas and won't need to pay wireless plan while I am gone.
Then, once I come back to the States, can I start to pay the remaining installment plan ($5.56 for 36 months after $1000 credit is applied)?
Or do I have to pay the full price of the new phone ($1200) in order to unlock and suspend it since I ordered the new phone after I received my order?
Thank you in advance for your answers!

You can get the phone unlocked, and use it overseas, but you will still have to pay for US service at the usual cost. You'd probably better off paying off the phone as required and unlocking it. Then using military cancellation determinate your AT&T service with number held for 39 months

First, there's no such thing as Military Suspension. AT&T offers Military Cancellation which will hold your number for up to 39 months. Cancel or Restore Service - US Military | AT&T (att.com)
Assuming you've had the phone more than 14 days (past the return period), you will need to contact AT&T to request the remaining installments be waived after which you can get the phone unlocked.

if you purchase the phones after you receive orders you are required to pay remaining installments or return phones within 14 days of purchase.

Excerpt below on installment plans.
Installment plans: You may be able to keep your device or accessory without making any additional monthly installment payments if you entered into the installment plan before receiving your deployment orders and you are outside the 14-day buyer’s remorse return period
