Help setting up a kids Apple Watch

Hi, I'm trying to set up an Apple Watch SE for my son. I've set up a cellular plan for the watch, but he doesn't have a phone with a cellular plan, so I am setting up through mine as a family member. I've spent hours on the phone to AT&T and been into their stores but still can't get it set up. Apparently it is a known software issue they are working on, I've also read a few similar articles on this forum here. My 14 day return period is up on Tuesday and I'm wondering if any one has any idea how long this might take to fix? Or if anyone has a work around. He has a phone that only has wifi, but I'm wondering if I buy a prepaid data card I could temporarily use that for set up? Or try my husband's T-Mobile phone for set up (as he doesn't have an apple watch, but I do). Any ideas?

No.

If you are following the directions for family setup, and I assume that you have read enough posts on here so that you are going through family share, and family set up and setting up the Apple watch from your iPhone, and it's not working.   Review - carefully!

Something as inconsequential as not having two-factor authentication set up, or not setting up your child with their own Apple ID has stymied people in the past without realizing it's critical to setting up the device correctly.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/109036#:~:text=Hold%20the%20watch%20near%20your%20iPhone&text=Wait%20until%20%22Use%20your%20iPhone,Continue%20on%20the%20next%20screen.

You can return the watch but they're going to charge you a $55 restock fee.  Get help from the Apple genius bar.   Or you can get the watch replaced under warranty from Apple. Most of the time replacing the watch resolves the problem if the Apple genius can't.

You must make sure you are not setting up the watch with numbersync as a companion.

Thanks. We’ve set it up multiple times, even had the guy at the AT&T store try. He has his own Apple ID. I think I’ll see if they can send a replacement. I believe after more reading the e sim is just not working for some reason? Thank you for you insight, the Genius Bar is a good idea too

Att does not provide warranty exchanges. Even for devices during the return and exchange window. You have to deal with Apple for a replacement watch

Did you get this resolved? Or did you return the watch?

I actually finally got it resolved! Anyone else with this issue, update the phone and watch (new updates just released) then call “tier 2 tech support” to have them reset up the eSIM (which had been deleted/missing somehow). Probably 15 hrs plus on this!
