Can I join a different area family plan ?

I'm in Virginia, and want to buy a contract phone. Can I join my brother's family plan who is in Los Angeles ? I heard that holder must be present when join the family plan. Is it true ?

Since it is the first time I buy contract phone, I have no idear about the process... Could you please give me a brief introduction of the process? Thanks a lot...

Yes, if you order a phone in  person, an authorized person on the account must be present.

First, if you join the plan, your phone number will be an L.A. phone number. I don't see a problem with that, but it matters to some people.

Probably the easiest way is for your brother to add a new line on-line and have it shipped to you.

I think ATT no longer has the requirement that all the lines must be from the same market anymore. I don't have an nbi account, and i'm allowed to change my number to a Florida number, when I live in New Mexico. Before, the website would give me an error stating that I can only choose a number from the same area.

You can try to order the phone online, but they may have a restriction to only ship to the billing address. Even then, the phone can then be forwarded to you by shipping it out.

Also, a reminder, that the taxes are based on a primary place of use address, not the billing address. So if taxes are lower where you live, remind your brother to give att your address to be added as the primary place of use under the profile for your number.
