Got a call, offering discounts and upgrade to retain loyal customers

Feeling a little foolish, hopefully I wasn’t scammed. Received a call unknown number with a speech about retaining customers that are loyal because they’ve lost a lot of customers. Every interaction I had with the person on the phone seemed legitimate as the texts that I was sent came from AT&T And everything we did was on the website. Today I got an email saying the two phones I ordered as upgrades have been canceled per my request. I didn’t request them to be canceled so now I’m not sure what’s happening. Any thoughts about my story are appreciated.

SCAM SCAM SCAM!

AT&T doesn't call to offer discounts! Change passwords, regularly check credit report, etc. Do everything you can to protect yourself. Any card info given out set fraud alerts!

Hey there @ammcdonagh,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention! We'd be glad to help you out.

Unwanted calls may be scams, sales pitches, or other annoyances. They may also be fraudulent or illegal. Caller ID spoofing occurs when a caller purposely displays incorrect caller ID information. Often this is done to try and commit fraud or otherwise cause harm to the recipient of the call. Spoofing can include robocalling, phone spamming, phantom debt collection, and voice phishing.

Phone scams can be difficult to detect, so pay special attention to calls that:

  • Request that you verify personal data (such as your Social Security number).
  • Ask you visit a website that appears to be affiliated with AT&T or another company.
  • Use an automated voice instructing you to return their call.
  • Instruct you to return their call at a different phone number than the one shown by Caller ID.
  • Claim to be a computer technician with a technical support company requesting remote access to your computer.
  • Claim you have won a sweepstakes, contest, or other item of value.
  • Claim you owe a debt or fine and ask that you take care of it today.
  • Request you provide a PIN, password, or passcode by phone if you didn’t initiate the request or ask for an update to your account, service, or profile.

For more information regarding spam calls, please visit the official AT&T website. (https://www.att.com/support/article/wireless/KM1047191)

Hope this helps!

@ammcdonagh

The best lies mix in enough truth to put you at ease. Information you provide may allow them to access your account to make some changes discussed to make it even more legit.

But AT&T, like most companies, does not call you to proactively offer a discount on your service. That is the red flag of a scam.

I also received the same call and they actually gave me a credit for $300 and then upgraded two of our phones to the new iPhone 15 Pro Max. It has not been cancelled yet. I actually called AT&T and was on the phone (landline) at the same time with another agent and I let him know what was going on while keeping the first agent on the call. He was checking my account to make sure it was a legitimate caller and he said it looked like it was legit but he couldn't be 100% sure. The credit was applied and the order for the upgrades were placed. I had to accept the terms and conditions. I am just praying that my bill does not come out to $500 every month for the next 36 months. He said it would be $220 per month for my bill for 4 phones. I will keep updating here.

Any update on this scam? My parents got the same call this evening and so did I. It sounds very suspicious and I have spent an hour on hold with AT&T and then also tried chatting and got nowhere.

It was indeed a scam. I fell for it because everything they were saying was happening on my account on the website. When I got the notice that the phones were canceled per my request, I knew it was a scam. My debit card did get used and I had to dispute it with my bank and get it canceled. If they offer to send you texts and free phones, hang up.

Thank you for your quick reply confirming my suspicions! Yes, it was pretty sophisticated, and they obviously had access to my account already.

got one today - similar. hung up after he offered the free phone (or watch or iPad) he texted twice saying they had to complete the process.  called the ATT fraud department, and they have no record of any of the offers they gave me.  they mentioned a hack earlier in the year which could have given them the info they had on the account.  changed password immediately.

had a similar call today.  offered discount for 3 yrs on bill due to recent outages in the area.  then offered either a free iPhone, watch or iPad for my years of loyalty and on time payments.  once he mentioned the payment I'd have to make for taxes, I said I didn't need the phone just give me the discounts.  when he place me on hold I hung up.  called ATT directly, their fraud dept said no such offers exist and they likely got the info they had on the account from the hack earlier in the year.

and I changed my password and pin immediately after I hung up -
