New Service

I tried to start new service but was told I need to settle a Directv bill. I contacted Directv and they cannot provide any information because it is in collections. I contacted this collection company and they are unable to provide any information on how or why I owe Directv. They can only provide an amount of almost 500 dollars but no reason as to why I do. Its been 5 plus years since I've had directv and I've returned all equipment. This does not show on my credit report as a collection but At&t internal system believes that I do. I am looking to port my 4 numbers over to At&t if I can get this resolved.

Request proof of debt from the collection agency.  If they can't provide it, ask them to remove the report from the credit agency.

Almost $500, and you admit to having DirecTV at some point in the past with equipment returned...

How long did you have the service?

DirecTv is a 2 year (24 month) with early termination fee of $20 per month, if full ETF of $480.

Only would have had 24 hours from installation to cancel without the ETF

The other possibility is non returned equipment fee, Uverse would have been $150 per item, not sure what DTV was but if similar with (4) receivers listed as not returned would be in the $450 to $500 range.

Jeffer,

They are unable to provide any proof other then the amount, but directv can't either since it suppose to be in collections. So I'm stuck in a catch 22 here. The issue seems to in the internal communication between directv and At&T. Thank you for your response.

If the collections agency should go to the original creditor to obtain proof of debt.  If they cannot get that, then the debt might as well not exist and they need to clear it and write you a letter telling you that they have cleared it.  Yes, DIRECTV sold the debt to the collections agency so they no longer have it online, so you cannot go to them for it, thus the collections agency must either put up or shut up.  You might want to involve the BBB for some assistance getting it escalated to AT&T's executive support group.

At issue or part of issue is ATT purchased DirecTv summer of 2015 and sold July 2021.

The question is the billing from before summer 2015 originally DirecTv then sold to ATT?

Or account established later say 2016 or 2017 when holder would be ATT that likely sold the overdue amount to a collection agency for a percentage of what was owed.

Either way I would not expect current DirecTv since new ownership July 2021 would have access to records, especially closed. / overdue accounts.

Result is in ATT records an unpaid balance that in essence flagged (blocked) future service. A possible work around would be create the new account in different name / SS# such as spouse.

The collection company cannot provide details, and Directv can't either. At&t obviously cannot, and finally this is again not showing on my credit report. Is there any avenue I can have this updated on AT&T side for a debt no one can provide details on?

Hi @angelacuna,

Thank you for reaching out.  I did speak with one of my colleagues with DIRECTV and they stated they would be able to assist. Please create a new thread in the DIRECTV Community Forums.

Thanks
