Phone is locked in ex/girlfriends name.

I brought my own device a iPhone 12 that was already locked to ATT previously when I got it. My girlfriend got a new phone in her name and I went on the account with my device I brought. Things happened and she let the bill get to an unreasonable amount, now the account is 1,400 past due as I could not make payments because she is the account holder. Is my phone essentially permanently bricked? Is the only way to use my phone to pay that balance and get it unlocked? Is there no other way? Can I  open my own ATT account with this phone instead since it’s locked to them?

Most likely you've just lost your number.

But the phone itself should have been activated on AT&T before October of 2022, which means that you can use it with a new number on AT&T, cricket, or any other AT&T mvno.

You can try submitting an unlock request, but it may be associated with the defaulted account

(My phone's activated on AT&T after October of 2022 are not only carrier locked but account restricted)
