Possible fraudulent call involving 611

We have received two phone calls where the caller said they were from ATT, to let us know that two iPhones were ordered in Kissimmee, FL that they flagged as suspicious.  They wanted me to tell them whether or not it was a valid purchase, which I did not.  When I questioned whether or not this was a scam, they told me to call 611 to contact ATT directly, which I did not. When I asked them whether that was a bogus number where I could be scammed they denied that was the case.

I see references to other types of fraudulent scams involving 611 area codes so I suspect this is in a similar vein.

Calling 611 is not a scam but the original call OP received, most likely is.

Calling 611 is not a scam. Calling 611 from your mobile phone gets you ATT customer support.

I agree with Ruddy. The original poster said they received a call from 611. 99.9% call or spoofing.

If the original poster wants to check with AT&T, they can call or chat with AT&T and get a legitimate service person. They can certainly check to see if something has been ordered on their account fraudulently

Never respond to a cold call. AT&T legitimate employees do not cold call their customers ever

Thanks everyone. To clarify, the calls I received were from an 866 area code (two different numbers), not from 611.  The second caller was the one who suggested I dial 611 after I questioned the validity of the call.

I had already logged on to my ATT account to make sure there were no fraudulent purchases charged to my account.  Even so, after posting here I did contact ATT directly to let them know what happened.

Hopefully this thread will help inform others who receive these types of scam calls.  The second caller in particular was very “smooth” in his delivery and in how he answered my attempts to expose the lie.

And that is exactly what you should do anytime you receive a cold call, an email, or a text message. Always go to the source, login on your own, or contact the business. There are too many scams out there

Someone one a scam call can tell you to call a legitimate number in hopes that you will be mollified and assume they wouldn't tell you to confirm it with a legitimate number if it were a scam and continue with the scam.  For the scammer, it's a last ditch effort to keep you on the phone.  If you hang up, you're gone anyway so there's no downside.

@Shambrika202  first piece of advice is to open your own thread (by clicking on "Ask a question" at the very top) instead of camping on another that isn't really related to your question.  Please explain exactly what you mean by "government phone" and know that we appreciate punctuation to help us understand what you're saying.
