Retiree Wireless Discounts -- AT&T Retail Store

I am going to sign up for new wireless service, and am an AT&T Retiree.  I have read the instructions on the retiree discount web site as to how to obtain the wireless discounts.  It's essentially sign up for service and then register on the web site.

The web site says that there are no activation fees for retirees, and says that there is a 40% discount on wireless accessories purchased in an AT&T store.  In both cases, it seems that the AT&T store would need to somehow be able to verify that I am a retiree.  So I asked in two different stores, how they can verify my retiree status when I sign up for new service or purchase accessories?   Neither store knew the answer.  Can someone assist?   Thanks.

I don't believe you identify yourself as an employee at sign up nor do I believe it is possible to get the discount at the start of your service. Like you said, after you sign up, then you register and add the discount through the website, which may mean you have no option but to pay for the original activation fees and the discount won't kick in for at least one bill cycle. Once the discount is on the account, it will then apply to in store purchases.

does "40% discount on wireless accessories purchased in an AT&T store" include the actual cell phone?

I would think "accessories" is not devices (or it would just say 40% off purchases), it's just the accessories....

No, it says on the web site I was viewing that there are no retiree
discounts on the phones themselves.
