Unlocking a phone gone wrong

We got a new phone and service plan with ATT in 2022.  only had it for 1 month and had to cancel it.  ATT cancelled it on 12/12/22 and they would not let us return it.  They made us pay $291.65 to cancel the contract and pay off the phone.  We thought we would re-establish it at some point, but our situation changed and we do not need it any longer.

Now I am trying to unlock it and sell it, but the unlock process is stating that it can't be unlocked because it is a pre-paid phone.   It is NOT a pre-paid phone.  How do i get this corrected?

Some things not quite making sense here.  If you had the phone a month, the reason they wouldn’t take it back is because the return period is 14 days and a month is past that, so that makes sense.  Regarding the $261, what was that for?  The remaining installments on the phone?  Because there haven’t been phone contracts for many years.  And $261 for the remaining installments on a month old phone seems to indicate that it’s a very cheap phone, which many phones sold as prepaid are.  Where did you get the phone?  The fact that you used the phone on post-paid doesn’t mean that it wasn’t sold as a prepaid phone.

Even if the prepaid was an error, it doesn’t seem likely that the phone is eligible for unlocking because it doesn’t sound like the minimum time of service was met for the phone if it was only used on AT&T for one month.  In any case, you’ll have to contact AT&T for help with unlocking it.

No one here on this customer forum can unlock the phone for you.  If that isn’t successful, you can try filing a FCC or BBB complaint to get it escalated to upper management for resolution.
