Why am I getting this error when trying to add a new phone - Based on your credit history, we need to make some changes to your order.

My credit score is over 800 with all 3 credit agencies but when I try to add a new iphone on promotion ($1.99/month) and line, I get this error - Based on your credit history, we need to make some changes to your order.  The phone then goes to full price. Why is this happening?  I called customer service and they can’t tell me what exactly is causing this. This is very frustrating and making me want to transfer my account to another company.

You’ll likely never know.  AT&T uses an internal credit score, and the customer service that you can call won’t have any information on anyone’s credit.

I don’t get why AT&T isn’t more transparent with their customers. Next time when it’s time for upgrades I will definitely look at other carriers. Shame.

As for going to store, that’s a good idea - illl try that.

I’m getting the same response and having the same issue. Credit score over 800. I did a search earlier and saw a response that it would correct itself at the next billing cycle. We just added a line and phone on installment plan last month which could be causing this for us. That shouldn’t be an issue though - seems AT&T should be able to override this.

It is unlikely AT&T is referring to your FICO score which maybe over 800. They are most likely referring to their internal credit score, the super secret AT&T internal credit score.

Even though the phone is on a $1.99 deal, AT&T is extending you credit for the full retail value of the phone over 36 months and crediting everything but $1.99 back every month over that same time.   If you already have several lines on your account with installments, that may have maxed out your credit limit. For example they gave you a $5,000 credit limit and you have four phone lines whose phones all add up to over $5,000 retail cost, you would have maxed

An AT&T corporate store may be able to override that internal credit score to get you the deal with a new line

We are having the same issue. Again, credit score is over 800 and if they are using internal scoring, well, we have been with AT&T since 2000 (was Ameritech and was still analog back then!) and have never been late on a payment so I'm not sure what else they would look at.  We tried both in store and through ATT sales (phone in) and was told the same message. In store said it was a known issue and that there were tickets in regarding it;  sales line didn't seem to know anything about it and said we may have to wait until next billing cycle. NOT HAPPY! We were trying to add two new lines for our 13 yo twins' birthday(s).

This is insane.  Yeah same thing happening to me today, makes no sense whatsoever.
