1. From your mobile phone, press and hold 1 or the Voicemail key.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • For a new voicemail box—follow the prompts to create your password and greeting.
    • For an existing voicemail box—enter your password if prompted. Your voicemail greeting and messages will transfer over to your new phone.

To set up and use Visual Voicemail, you'll have to:
  •  Have a smartphone and data plan that includes Visual Voicemail (included on most wireless and PREPAID smartphone data plans).
  •  Use your own smartphone - you can't set up voicemail from another phone.
  •  Connect to the 4G LTE data network.
  •  Install the AT&T Visual Voicemail app if your Android device doesn't already have Visual Voicemail built in or the app pre-installed.

Once you have met these requirements, we can help you learn how to set up Visual Voicemail on your smartphone.

To set your voicemail box using the phone connected to your AT&T Voicemail (such as your home number), follow these steps:
  1.  Dial *98 or dial your Access Number.
  2.  Follow the prompts to set up your mailbox.

To set up your mailbox using a phone number not connected to your AT&T Voicemail, follow these steps:
  1.  Dial your Access Number.
  2.  Enter your Temporary PIN (your 10-digit phone number).
  3.  Follow the prompts to set up your mailbox.

Voicemail is included with most AT&T PREPAID^SM plans for phones at no additional charge¹:
  •  AT&T offers AT&T PREPAID plans that include Visual Voicemail at no additional charge for compatible smartphones.
  •  For all other phones, we offer Basic Voicemail at no additional charge.

Note: Some AT&T PREPAID plans in Puerto Rico don't include free Basic Voicemail. You can add Basic Voicemail at an additional charge.

Standard airtime charges apply to all calls from your phone to voicemail, including calls to set up voicemail and forwarding voicemail messages. Data and messaging used replying to and forwarding voicemail messages via messaging or email counts against your data and/or messaging plan.

The type of voicemail option available to you depends on which phone and service you have. For example, wireless and AT&T PREPAID℠ data plans for compatible smartphones include Visual Voicemail at no additional charge. Basic Voicemail comes with your plan if you have a wireless or AT&T PREPAID phone without a data plan or Wireless Home Phone.

Notes:
  •  To prevent your calls from going to voicemail temporarily, you can change your Call Forwarding settings.
  •  If you want to use your answering machine with Wireless Home Phone, you must first remove your voicemail.

In order to keep your service safe and secure, you'll need to reset your password if you've forgotten it. But, don't worry, we've made it easy for you to reset your Wireless voicemail password:
  1.  Go to your account overview and open My wireless.
  2.  Scroll to My Devices & add-ons and choose the device you want to manage.
  3.  Select Manage my device.
  4.  Look in Device options & settings, choose Reset voicemail password, and follow the prompts.

Note: These steps are for resetting your Wireless voicemail password. Please refer to Reset your Digital phone password or Reset your Home Phone password to change the voicemail password for your other phone services.

In order to keep your service safe and secure, you must enter your current voicemail password before you can change it. If you don't know it, reset your voicemail password.

Once you have your current password, you can call the voicemail system to change your password:
  1. From your AT&T wireless phone, press and hold 1.
Note: For AT&T Wireless Home Phone, dial 1.
  2.  If prompted, enter your voicemail password.
  3.  If you have new messages, press the * key to skip to the Main Menu.
  4.  In the Main Menu:
    •  Press 4 for Personal Options.
    •  Press 2 for Administrative Options.
    •  Press 1 for Password Options.
    •  Press 1 to Change Password.
  5.  Follow the prompts to enter a 7- to 15-digit password.
  6.  Press the # key then end the call.
Note: If you have Visual Voicemail, access your Visual Voicemail screen and enter the new voicemail password when prompted.

If you are going to be traveling internationally, we have some detailed steps to help ensure you can check your voicemail messages while traveling outside the United States.

By default, the voicemail system requires a password when you call to access your voicemail:
  •  For your security, we recommend you leave this password requirement on.
  •  For increased security, change your voicemail password periodically.
  •  This helps prevents unauthorized voicemail access from your own or another phone.
  •  If you absolutely need to, you can call the voicemail system to enable or disable the voicemail password requirement.

We also recommend that you lock your smartphone screen to keep your personal info safe. Setting a security option on your phone or tablet will help prevent outsiders from accessing your voicemail, contacts, personal info, or other important data.
