BGW320-505 Provides LAN Instead of WAN IP in IP Passthrough

I'm getting close, but still missing something on IP Passthrough.

I have gigabit optical service through a BGW320-505 feeding a Ubiquity USG Pro 4 via IP Passthrough. Packet Filters, NAT Default Server, and Firewall Advanced are all set to off. All Firewall Advanced features are also set to off. The IP Passthrough settings are as follows.

Allocation Mode = Passthrough

Default Server Internal Address = Blank

Passthrough Mode = DHCPS-Fixed

Passthrough Fixed MAC Address = Manual MAC of USG Pro 4 (triple checked)

Passthrough DHCP Lease = 10 Min (was previously set for 99 days)

My problem is that the WAN address (of both the USG-Pro-4 device and the WAN portion of the Unifi controller) is an address from the DHCP pool of the BGW320 (192.168.0.3) and not the IP address that matches whatismyip. On previous instances of IP Passthrough to other routers, the BGW320 provided the correct external IP, and not an internal IP from the DHCP pool. For what it's worth, the BGW320's IP is 192.168.0.1 and it has a DHCP range of 192.168.0.2-192.168.0.254. The Ubiquity router, switch, and APs are on 192.168.1.0/24.

With this setup, I do receive internet. Though it is ~300 Mbps slower than the speeds achieved by the BGW alone. Is this okay, or is there something I'm missing.

If your Router isn't receiving the IP address, maybe it's still working on that 99 day lease and isn't asking for a new lease.  Can you force it to give up the old lease?

I performed an software update on the router last night in the hopes that it would do some good. As a part of that refresh, I assumed the unit would restart and grab a new IP (from the Gateway with a now 10 min lease time). I will power cycle both the Gateway and Router this morning and report back.

Thank you for the suggestion. I reset the Gateway, Router, and Cloud Key. The IP is still being stubborn.

Is the BGW320 known for retaining settings against the users will? I know that the old TP Link router I used to use would tell me something had changed when indeed it had not. I just don't understand why it would give out an IP from its DHCP pool unless it thinks it's still a router. And I thought that changing it to IP Passthrough would basically tell it to knock that off.

A friend stopped by to help out and set IP Passthrough to DHCPS-Dynamic. This lead to my router immediately being assigned the proper WAN IP address, instead of the LAN address it was previously assigning. We have no clue why DHCPS-Fixed didn't work, but we know that Dynamic did. Note to self, don't be afraid to play with the buttons and reset. :)

Thanks, JefferMC, for trying to help.

The DHCP-Dynamic setting means that the first device to request an IP address on your Gateway will be treated as the IP Passthrough target.  So do not connect anything else to the Gateway in order for this to be reliable.

If that is a problem, you could still do manual.

Thanks again. I won't connect anything to the gateway. I might try manual or fixed again down the road. At this point I'm a bit weary to even touch it. Will post back if anything changes.

I still don't understand why DHCPS-Fixed didn't work. And that's a bit unnerving.

@cerbera79 I had a similar experience/symptoms with a BGW320 and a UDM Base.  The problem was that I was entering the MAC addr displayed on the UDMB GUI homepage in the BGW passthrough page.  Turns out that addr is not the MAC addr of the WAN port (it's one of the LAN interfaces in the case of the UDMB)

I ssh'ed into the UDM and got the interface list via an ifconfig.  I could see which interface had the public IP (eth4 for the UDMB).  Went back to the BGW IP Passthrough page and set it for DHCPS-fixed with that MAC addr and everything works: UDMB GUI homepage shows the public IP.

This thread got me pointed in the right direction.  Thanks.
