DOS Attack every few minutes

I was trying to figure out why I was getting packet burst issues with my PC when I'm gaming. It's been going on for a few months now and makes gaming unenjoyable. While browsing solutions I came across a thread on here, where an AT&T tech recommended checking your logs and seeing if there was any DOS attacks. I noticed on mine I'm getting them in 2 minute intervals, and after the second one, there's a 5 minute period and then it repeats. How do I stop this and protect my router?

If it's a true DoS attack, you find out who's behind it and ring them up and politely ask them to stop.

OTOH, it could be the game behaving normally and your Gateway just deciding its a DoS attack and dumping the traffic.

If you have AT&T Internet Security enabled, disable it for a few hours and see if the issue goes away.

When I sent the message last night, I wasn't playing a game or anything. I just monitored my logs for an hour after reading a response from a AT&T Tech and that's what was happening. I saw some replies from you, where a guy was messing with his mtu to try and fix his packet log issues. I don't know anything about the mtu, so I haven't attempted to mess with them. But the packet loss issues didn't start until a few months ago, and It's been super frustrating especially when I have fiber internet.

Your fine your AT&T Gateway is catching the DOS "attacks" that's why they are in the log. There is a lot of random junk floating around the Internet.

Don't mess with your MTU it is 1500 for Ethernet connections. No need to change it unless you are using a VPN as there is additional information need for the VPN.

Are these packet loss issues being reported in your Game interface?

Packet loss is normal on the Internet. It is considered junk traffic since it is not data being lost just ICMP Echo requests that have no priority and many routers discard 100% of packets directed to them for path mapping.

I play cod mw3 and that’s when the packet burst issues happen. I deleted the shader cache and it made my game run perfect for one game and then the next game it was back to packet issues.

I only play ranked so if you stutter right before a gunfight which is what happens, it makes the whole experience ruined as someone’s who’s game runs fine will beat you.

I haven’t found a solution yet as to why it’s happening, other the posts that talked about mtu or if your router is getting DOSd, so that’s why I posted on here to hear people’s opinion who know more than I do about this stuff.

@Levi_

Which COD MW3 servers are you using and what region of the US are you located in?

If it’s written on the internet, it must be truth. 🙄

I would do this test Ethernet connected directly to gateway.  If it’s practical, factory reset the gateway so you have the purest possible setup.  I might even suggest disabling the wifi radios to exclude them from the equation.  There might also be a suggestion to disable IPv6.

There are some common third party logs or graphs you can share to demonstrate the suspected problem.
