How to setup a custom router with AT&T Fiber
Hey guys. So I currently have AT&T Fiber for my household and own the HUMAX BGW320-500 that was lent to me by AT&T. However, I've been doing lots of research about VPNs and I'm considering purchasing a VPN such as Surfshark and setting it up for my router so my house can be protected.
After doing some research, I came across the disappointing news that you're unable to setup your own VPN on the AT&T gateway, so I was wondering, how am I able to setup my own router which I can use to setup a VPN on? Do you guys recommend any particular routers?
I appreciate any advice for me! I'm a bit of a tech noob, so I'm not sure how to answer this question myself haha.

Correct the AT&T Gateway's don't support adding a VPN service within the Gateway. However you can use access VPNs from any client device that you have a VPN client active on. Surfshark is a client app that runs on your devices and not on a router.
Why do you think you need a VPN to protect your house?
Here is a random article on third-party routers that support VPNs at the router level: https://www.techradar.com/news/best-vpn-routers

Hey, I appreciate the response! Yes, I'm aware that I could run a VPN on a client, but my family would like to set it up on the router to protect all the devices in my home. It's less of a hassle than installing Surfshark on all of my devices.
To respond to your question about why I think it would protect my house: I spend most of my life on the internet, and having a VPN would be beneficial since it helps keep our privacy safe. I don't like companies knowing where I'm located. Additionally, it would help me mask my location so that I can access shows that are outside of the U.S.
I hope that clarifies everything!

I don’t feel comfortable recommending a router, but there are many resources out there to research. After that, you’ll need to put the Att gateway into IP passthrough mode. The gateway has information within it but track down other written instructions and tuck it away for safe keeping.
I'm with Dave on this. While the privacy thing is important and required to defeat geofencing, having it on all the time can cause unexpected issues. I for instance subscribe to a VPN service but only use it when needed. If I were to leave it on all the time, I’d be under a constant barrage of this or that doesn’t work. When I do run the VPN to watch foreign programming, I’m usually having to reach out to the VPN support team, who are frankly very responsive, but it still takes my time and there is wait time for things to get cleared up. Caveat emptor and good luck.
